  • Health The syncytial virus is primed with newborns in Italy: what are its symptoms?

The pediatric chiefs of German hospitals warned on Tuesday that they fear a health "collapse" due to the surge in cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in children, aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The

VRS

, which is a common viral disease, affects mostly

children under four years

and regularly increasing the number of cases in cold season, but the German health take weeks warning of how hard it is hitting the virus this year.

Among the reasons, they cite the confinement measures due to Covid-19 last winter, which led to many children not being immunized and are now becoming massively infected.

"The closures of nurseries and schools have led to

poorly trained children's immune systems

. Now they lack well-oiled defenses against viruses," explained Andreas Trotter, president of the Association of Chiefs of Pediatrics and Pediatric Surgeons of Germany (VLKKD).

A dramatic saturation

This Wednesday the VLKKD warned through a statement that the pediatric plants are facing a "dramatic saturation" in the coming months, urging the Government to take measures to avoid a "collapse."

According to Trotter, 78% of the country's children's clinics already face problems that have forced them to pause the admission of new patients and

refer sick children to other hospitals,

sometimes very far away.

Added to the saturation by the high number of infected is the lack of specialized personnel in the pediatric wards, exacerbated by the covid pandemic, which has forced many clinics to reduce the number of beds.

The VLKKD therefore asks the Government to temporarily relax the requirements that require a minimum of specialized personnel per number of beds, so that it is possible to attend to more patients.

The German media have reported for weeks that pediatric and children's intensive care units in large cities

are saturated due to RSV

, in many cases forcing children to be transferred to hospitals tens of kilometers away.

"Already in previous years RSV has pushed us to the limit. But now it affects so many children as never before in a single season," said emergency doctor Florian Hoffman, quoted by the newspaper "Süddeutsche Zeitung".

According to Hoffman, between 2 and 3% of infected children require hospitalization, and a third of these, intensive care.

The virus particularly severely affects premature babies or those with heart problems.
