A known poor housing crisis
On Monday November 5, 2018, at 9:05 am, two buildings collapsed at 63 and 65 of this street, in the heart of the working-class district of Noailles. They take with them eight inhabitants. This tragedy in the hypercentre of Marseille brings to light the crisis of unsanitary housing in France's second city, led for 25 years by the mayor (LR) Jean-Claude Gaudin. The crisis is however well known. In 2015, a government report counted 40,000 slums in Marseille, i.e. 100,000 people out of 860,000 inhabitants.
In this episode, Mathilde Ceilles and Adrien Max, journalists with the local editorial staff of
20 Minutes
in the Phocaean city, return to the day of the tragedy, then the anger of the Marseillais as the extent of the crisis is discovered. Then the wounds never closed, because the poor housing crisis continues, three years later, in the second largest city in France. Around 1,400 people have currently been evicted due to substandard housing. And big plans were announced by the head of state in September 2021 to speed up renovations in the center.
