  • Sustainability Boris Johnson urges world leaders to ditch coal

Now that the sharp rises in the electricity bill and

fossil fuels

monopolize one headline after another, and coinciding with the celebration of the Climate Summit in Glasgow, the careful energies with the environment and also with the pocket are living a ' informational boom 'that, foreseeably, will also be accompanied by real changes in the way we consume.

One of the options that are getting the most talk, and are experiencing the most boom in sales, are

wood pellets

. It is a form of

biomass made from sawdust and leftover elements from wood

. Like olive pits or nut shells, they can become a

sustainable energy

source

and used as fuel for stoves or

heating

boilers

. There are, in fact, that work with various kinds of biomass, but the most common and efficient are those of

pellet

wood

, whose sales this year

are between 30% and 40% above the estimate

.

The price of

pellets

, unlike that of electricity or other fuels, does not seem to be subject to significant variations, since it comes from waste. On the other hand, and according to a study carried out by the University of New Hampshire and published in the journal 'Energy' in 2017, pellets can

reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by more than half

, compared to fossil fuels or natural gas. The same research estimated that 42% of the energy consumed in the US is dedicated to heating homes.

In Spain, the consumption of pellets has gone from a

slow and sustained growth during the last 10 years -

interrupted by the pandemic - to a recent boom that, in the absence of consolidating the data, the sector has already identified. In fact, forecasts for both production and

consumption of pellets have skyrocketed

for next year, although they will also be subject to fluctuations due to the weather.

"The 2021 wood pellet production is estimated at 716,000 tons, similar to the pre-Covid figure of 2019, which was 714,000. In 2020, there was somewhat less due to the pandemic, but, above all, because it was a mild winter .

In 2022 it is estimated that 790,000 tons will be produced

", indicates Pablo Rodero Masdemont, expert of the Spanish Biomass Association (AVEBIOM) and president of the European Pellet Council, which are the entities that manage the ENplus certification for wood pellets at the national and global, respectively.

"They work like a fluid"

The

pellets

compress the material inside to the fabricated by applying pressure, "as spaghetti or animal feed" exemplifies Rodero. Once in the boiler, "they work like a fluid", he emphasizes, "so the installations can be automated". In contrast to the firewood that "you have to put in every day", these 'pills' of sawdust are coming out of the deposit and "depending on how big it is, they can last 15 days or a month". That is to say, if they are installed in a community of owners, for example, "

the neighbor practically does not realize if he has gas or has pellets

".

The consumption of

pellets

in Spain for 2021 is estimated at 751,700 tons;

and in 2022, 806,700 were calculated before the current "rush," reflects Rodero.

"If it is a normal winter, both estimates will be increased."

Regarding pellet stoves, the forecast was to sell 53,000 in 2021 and 60,500 in 2022, but those numbers, given the current 'boom', "

can easily increase by 40% this winter

, due to the prices of fossil fuels. ".

An increase similar to what boilers could experience.

They were expected to sell about 4,600 this year and more than 5,000 next, but the increase that is being experienced will also, foreseeably, increase those figures.
