• Motorists have been imposed on snow tires in many departments since November 1, according to a message widely relayed on Twitter.

  • If a new law has been applied since Monday, it does not require motorists to drive only with winter tires in certain areas.

  • Drivers can also choose to equip themselves with chains.

This is the consequence of a law passed in 2016. Motorists driving in certain mountainous municipalities must now equip themselves for the winter.

However, are snow tires mandatory in 48 departments, even if we only cross these territories?

This is what a popular tweet, posted on Monday, claims.

FAKE OFF

Since November 1, motorists driving in certain municipalities do not have to drive with winter tires.

Their car must be fitted with winter tires or they must have chains (metal or textile) in their car.

These chains must be stored in the vehicle and ready to be installed in the event of bad weather, insists Road Safety.

For this winter, all-season tires must be stamped "3PMSF" or bear the mention "M + S" to comply with this new rule.

Please note, from 2024, only tires stamped "3PMSF" will be considered as winter tires.

Cars fitted with studded tires as well as vehicles without a license are not affected by this new regulation.

The obligation applies in certain municipalities in the mountain ranges.

A map, which is subject to change, is available on the Road Safety website.

New roadside signs indicate these areas where motorists must be fitted with winter tires or chains.

In order to comply with this obligation, drivers of light vehicles, utility vehicles and camper vans must:

The measure is valid until March 31, 2022 and is intended to be renewed each year.

Motorists still have a few months to adapt to this new regulation: those who are not in order will not be penalized this year, reassures the Ministry of Territorial Cohesion.
