The Iraqi Ministry of Interior said that Sharia and law permit the marriage of a minor through the agency of her father, after a video of a mother pleading with people to save her 12-year-old daughter from her father, who decided to marry her to the brother of his second wife.

In a video circulated by activists, the mother said that her daughter's father decided to marry her off with a customary and illegal contract, which sparked a wide wave of interaction that prompted activists to organize a campaign to pressure the authorities to take action.

This prompted the Community Police in the Relations and Information Department of the Ministry of Interior to respond in a statement on its Facebook page, which sparked controversy.


And she said in the statement, according to "Russia Today", that "the community police in the Department of Relations and Information reached the truth of what was recently spread on social media, of a video clip of a woman in which she said that her ex-husband, the father of their 12-year-old daughter, had married their daughter, who was under her care after her divorce." from her father, under duress outside the court and without the daughter’s consent.”

He added: "The Director of the Community Police, Brigadier Ghaleb Al-Attiyah, stated that he had formed a joint working group from the Women's Affairs and Clan Affairs divisions of the Community Police to find out the truth of what was mentioned in the video."


He continued: "The work team met the girl, her father, her husband and her brother, and the girl confirmed that the marriage took place with her consent, without anyone hating her or forcing her to do so, and that the team was briefed on the legal contract under which the underage girl was married."

Brigadier Ghaleb Al-Attiyah indicated that the community police had implemented more than one awareness campaign to reduce the cases of underage marriage in most of the country's governorates.

He added: "The community police will continue its awareness campaign to curb this marriage, follow up on cases in which it is proven that minors are forced to do so, and take legal measures against those involved."
