On the 29th, a venture company in Kyoto City announced that a venture company in Kyoto City will use "genome editing" technology that can freely manipulate genes to improve the speed of growth as a "genome editing food". The notification was submitted to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

This tiger puffer was jointly developed by Kyoto University and Kyoto City's venture company "Regional Fish". Genome editing technology has been improved to suppress the function of genes and eat more food, resulting in faster growth. It means that it is about 1.9 times larger.

Unlike "genetically modified foods", "genome-edited foods" do not incorporate another gene, so it is said that the safety of conventional breeding is the same, and notification to the national government is required. So, it can be distributed.

"Genome editing food" 3rd case in Japan

At a special study meeting of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare held on the 29th, this tiger puffer was not classified as a "genetically modified food", and the company notified the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare as a "genome-edited food".

The poisonous parts are the same as the conventional tiger puffer, so the company has started accepting trial sales.

This is the third case in Japan of a "genome-edited food", following tomatoes, which are said to lower blood pressure and have a large amount of meat, and red sea bream, which has a large amount of meat.
