  • Justice Alec Baldwin fatal shooting investigation focuses on gun custody

"Why did you give me a loaded gun? Why?" That was the desperate cry of actor

Alec Baldwin

right after he mistakenly shot the cinematographer and director of the movie he was working on, 'Rust'. The events occurred last Thursday at 1:50 p.m. (in Spain, 8:50 p.m.), in Bonanza Creek Ranch, near Santa Fe (New Mexico).

After days of revelations about the investigation being carried out by the sheriff's office, the only thing that is known for sure is that it was

negligence and carelessness

.

Out of recklessness and wanting to hastily finish filming this

low-budget western

to be talking about Hollywood (six million dollars), Baldwin accidentally shot the film's cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, 42, and the director, Joel Souza, 48. Hutchins died before reaching the hospital and Souza was slightly injured in the shoulder.

Play hitting shots

Yesterday's revelations were particularly shocking. Everyone wondered how it was possible that a pistol that should be a 'prop' had real bullets inside. But yesterday it emerged that the members of the film's technical team days before the incident were loading the prop weapons with real bullets and

playing shooting at

empty

beer cans

near the filming set. This game, commonly known as 'plinking' is very popular in the United States (keep in mind that there are about 329 million Americans and the country has at least 390 million weapons).

In any case, the first rule of thumb for shooting is that the weapons used cannot be loaded with live ammunition.

They are special weapons that do not carry bullets and, when firing, they simply make noise and emit a kind of flash that looks like lightning, but nothing comes out of the interior of the barrel.

Negligence and accusations

But ... how did a loaded pistol end up in Baldwin's hands?

Assistant Director

Dave Halls

handed it to him.

What's more: when he did, he shouted "unloaded weapon", as is usual in filming, to inform the actors and actresses and the rest of the team that they can use it safely.

However, it also emerged yesterday that Halls had been kicked out of another shoot previously for another gun incident.

He was reportedly expelled because a gun was fired in error and for sexual misconduct.

In fact, in the call they made to emergencies after what happened, the script supervisor in the production could be heard lashing out at Halls, speaking of him as "that son of a b ...".

And who gave Halls the loaded gun?

Apparently, it was done by the gunsmith in the film,

Hannah Gutiérrez-Reed

, who had little experience.

At 24, he got the job after other more experienced gunsmiths quit because of the film's tight budget.

In addition, Gutiérrez-Reed is the daughter of a famous Hollywood stuntman and gunsmith who personally taught her the trade.

What can happen now

The possible consequences of what happened have yet to be determined.

The witnesses would save Baldwin from criminal consequences for this negligence, but Halls and Gutierrez-Reed are at great risk of suffering them.

However, the insurance of the film will hardly be enough to cover the damages caused since the victim's family, in the absence of an out-of-court settlement, will be able to sue both and the production for damages.

And Baldwin is a co-producer, so even if it doesn't have criminal consequences for the actor, it is most likely that he will face civil ones.
