The Surfrider association has submitted a file to the NGO SaveTheWaves for the surf spots of the Basque Coast to be recognized as a world surf reserve.
Several waves, such as the Mouscariette in Biarritz or the long wave of the Barre have disappeared in recent years.
Security work or the construction of dikes would have modified the silting required for the formation of these waves.
Classifying the surf spots, from Anglet to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, would make it possible to benefit from a local council responsible for ensuring their protection and biodiversity, in particular by limiting the urbanization of the coast, explains
Sud-Ouest.
.
They could also benefit from the support of the NGO SaveTheWaves and discuss with other world surf reserves such as the Gold Coast in Australia or Ericeira in Portugal.
No law protects the waves
“This would also allow us to establish legitimacy to support communities in their decision-making,” said the co-manager of the Basque Coast branch of Surfrider.
And in particular to simplify the negotiations concerning the mobilization that was put in place following the development project of the Marbella beach in Biarritz.
For the moment, no law protects the waves.
Several personalities and elected officials have agreed to support the application for the Basque Coast.
The final result should be revealed by the end of the year.
