In the fight against a new wave of corona infections, China is quarantining the metropolis of Lanzhou.
The city's four million inhabitants in the northwest of the country are only allowed to leave their homes in emergencies, the city administration said on Tuesday.
Previously, 29 new infections with the corona virus had been registered across China.
The day before, new corona restrictions had been imposed in the capital Beijing a good hundred days before the start of the Winter Olympics.
The residents of Beijing were asked to only leave the city in urgent cases and to avoid large crowds.
The Beijing marathon planned for next Sunday has been postponed indefinitely.
Several residential complexes were cordoned off.
Compared to other countries, the cases registered nationwide are very few.
However, the Chinese government has been pursuing a strict zero-covid strategy since the beginning of the pandemic: the authorities are responding to new cases of infection with mass tests and targeted lockdowns.
A major corona outbreak in the country should be prevented at all costs before the Winter Olympics, which begin on February 4.
