Inflammation of the salivary glands .. causes, symptoms and treatment methods

The German Association of Otolaryngologists said that sialadenitis is an inflammation of the large salivary glands in the head, namely: the parotid glands, the submandibular glands and the sublingual glands.

Causes of sialadenitis

The association explained that salivary gland inflammation has several causes, including:

  •  poor oral hygiene,

  • Oral mucosal inflammation

  • Chronic diseases such as diabetes

  • autoimmune diseases

  •  Head and neck radiotherapy

  • Radioiodine therapy for thyroid diseases

  • Another cause of sialadenitis is a lack of saliva secretion, especially in the elderly, due to drinking a small amount of fluids, poor appetite, drinking alcohol, saliva stones, tumors, or scarring of the salivary ducts.

The cause of sialadenitis may lie in medications such as antidepressants, diuretics, antihistamines, and beta-blockers.

    Symptoms of sialadenitis

Symptoms of sialadenitis include: redness and swelling of the glands, pain and sensitivity to pressure, in addition to fever, chills, and a general feeling of fatigue and exhaustion.

    sialadenitis treatment

The association indicated that sialadenitis is treated according to the cause, explaining that the treatment is by antibiotics, if the inflammation is due to a bacterial cause.

If the cause of the inflammation is a virus, then the symptoms are relieved by analgesics, which have anti-inflammatory or antipyretic effects such as ibuprofen or paracetamol.

Cold compresses can also help relieve pain.

If an autoimmune disease causes sialadenitis, corticosteroids are treated to suppress the immune system, thus preventing the inflammatory reaction.

If medications are suspected to be the cause of sialadenitis, their use should be discontinued if possible.

In general, saliva-stimulating foods such as gum or lemon should be eaten, taking into account good oral hygiene and drinking plenty of fluids.
