Saudi Arabia establishes the first professional association for theater and performing arts

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced the establishment of the first professional association for theater and performing arts, which will gather under its umbrella professional practitioners in the fields of theater, folk arts, circus, stand-up comedy and dance.

And the Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, Ahmed bin Sulaiman Al-Rajhi, issued a decision yesterday, Sunday, to form the association’s board of directors, headed by artist Nasser Al-Qasabi.

The committee includes academic researcher Sami Al-Jamaan, actor Rashid Al-Shamrani, director Khaled Al-Baz, actor and playwright Yasser Madkhali, writer Fahd Al-Hoshani, kinetic arts performer Roaa Al-Sahhaf, stand-up comedian Yasser Bakr, actor Sami Al-Zahrani, actress Fatima Al-Banawi and ballerina Samira Al-Khamis.

Al-Qasabi wrote on his personal account on Twitter, "For more than thirty years, dramatists have suffered from enormous challenges and great difficulties. I am honored to work with my colleagues in the new association to overcome difficulties and advance this lofty profession."


He added, "Colleagues, theatrical colleagues, in a few months the work of the association will be launched, and we look forward to your participation in a new creative journey."

The decision to establish the association was welcomed by artists and artists in Saudi Arabia and a number of writers, critics and media professionals through their accounts on social media, including actor Muhammad Al-Kanhal, director Tawfiq Al-Zaydi, poet Muhammad Abes and artist Abdul Ilah Al-Sanani, a professor at King Saud University.

Over the past few years, Saudi Arabia has witnessed an openness in the field of arts and the establishment of various entities and bodies, most notably the General Entertainment Authority in 2016 and the Literature, Publishing and Translation Authority in 2020.
