[Explanation] On the campus of Harbin Normal University, the students passed a word of mouth about a "three jue" professor who focused on the reproductive research of "ferns", with a "stubborn" personality, a "stubborn" temper, and a determination to study and research. To be "extremely", he is Liu Baodong, professor of pteridophyte at Harbin Normal University.

[Explanation] Liu Baodong is a teacher, doctoral tutor, and Level 3 professor at Harbin Normal University in Heilongjiang Province. He has been engaged in scientific research and teaching work on the reproduction and development of ferns. He has successfully reproduced Chinese Allium chinensis and Alsophila spinulosa, which are known as "Plant Giant Panda". More than half of the species on the protected list of Chinese ferns, such as, Golden Retriever Fern, and the ancient and precious species named after him "Baodong Water Allium" have also been certified internationally.

[Explanation] It is understood that Liu Baodong majored in botany when he was in college. As he continued to study and research, he slowly developed a strong interest in ferns and determined to protect the endangered species.

I chose this direction for fern propagation and fern cultivation in botany. I was really passionate about plants at that time because I was born in a rural area. Later, I discovered more and more species in my work. Through this approach, I can To protect, so I am more determined to go forward and do some real work for the protection of ferns. This is one of my original intentions in choosing this direction.

[Explanation] Liu Baodong told reporters that studying fern embryos is not an overnight task. In order to find the best fern spores, he often takes his students to collect them in deep mountains and old forests. It is not rare to encounter wild animals and landslides.

Staying in the laboratory for many years for research, working with specimens at the same time with both hands, so that right-handed Liu Baodong can now write Chinese characters proficiently with his left hand. Professor Liu laughed and called this his unique "occupational disease."

[Explanation] For Liu Baodong, the fern embryos in the laboratory are like his own children. The embryos at the early stage of development are more like small babies. They are hopeful but also need the careful care of "parents". During the critical period, they wake up in the middle of the night. Adjusting the ambient temperature and humidity is also commonplace.

"The process is hard but also happy" Professor Liu Baodong said with a slight smile on his face.

Although there were a lot of difficulties, I slowly persisted. Of course, during this process, there were several shakes. Later, I thought, since I have done it for this purpose, if I don’t continue to persist, I can do it. Things, the types of (ferns) that I can protect, if I lose them in my hands or don’t protect them well, I feel regretful. From this perspective, I’m “stubborn” again.

So insisting on to this day, I can make a little contribution to the protection of national ferns. It is because of my profession, and I have come to this day by constantly overcoming difficulties.

[Commentary] According to Liu Baodong's recollection, when he was studying in Japan, at an exchange meeting, he took out the Chinese water leek that he had successfully bred, which caused a sensation in the venue.

At that moment, Professor Liu Baodong felt a sense of national pride spontaneously, and he strengthened his research path even more.

[Explanation] After returning from studying abroad, Liu Baodong decided to stay in his alma mater Harbin Normal University to continue his research and teaching.

In the eyes of the students, Professor Liu is rigorous but witty in his lectures. He is good at discovering the strengths of others. While granting students knowledge, he also allows them to sit on the bench naturally. "Interest is the best teacher" is also Liu Baodong's teaching creed.

One time that reminds me is that he can remember the small “shining points” of everyone in the class in such a short period of time in class, for example, a classmate’s strong observation ability, let him discover, or It was said that his classmates actively thought about the problem and studied in depth, and he could discover the "shining points" of the entire class in just one or two hours.

[Explanation] They are "good teachers" in class and "good friends" in life. Students are often infected by Professor Liu Baodong's serious research attitude and optimistic life style.

[Concurrent] Yang Shuo, a graduate student of Harbin Normal University

The one thing that impressed me the most was that once we (collecting) climbed halfway through the mountain, everyone was very tired. When we were exhausted, Teacher Liu sang for us and sang "Northern Spring" to make us happy. To encourage us to keep going.

【Explanation】Professor Liu Baodong said that as a student, now as a researcher and mentor, he is a link between the past and the next. He hopes that through his own efforts, he will make more contributions to the embryonic research of fern species and also hope to teach more plants. Learn knowledge and encourage more students to devote themselves to the cause of protecting endangered ferns.
