A new vaccine candidate shows great promise against coronavirus variants

A

vaccine

against the

coronavirus

based on nanoparticles and developed by scientists at the

Scripps Research

(USA) causes immune responses that suggest a very powerful and comprehensive protection against

SARS-CoV-2

in a preclinical study.

The results, published in the journal

Science Advances

, need to be confirmed in human trials, but they point to the possibility of achieving strong and long-lasting immunity against all major variants of

SARS-CoV-2

.

This experimental vaccine does not use viruses, messenger RNA, or single copies of the

SARS-CoV-2

spike protein

, and is instead made of proteins that self-assemble into virus-like nanoparticle structures.

The researchers found that, in mice, these nanoparticle structures elicit immune responses that powerfully neutralize the original Wuhan strain of

SARS-CoV-2

, and with the same potency all other major variants of interest, including the fast-spreading delta variant. .

The scientists also examined the cell roots of the immunity induced by their experimental vaccine, showing how their coronavirus-like particles - compared to the loose copies of the

SARS-CoV-2

spike protein

used by other vaccines - they had a much longer and stronger commitment to immune cells that give rise to long-term immunity.
