Two people were hit by a train in the Harburg district on Friday evening and fatally injured.

The 33-year-old man and the 29-year-old woman ran onto the tracks near a train station in Neu Wulmstorf near Hamburg, as a police spokesman said.

According to initial assumptions from the night, they overlooked an approaching regional train.

The train hit them, they both died instantly, it said.

The exact circumstances were initially unclear on Saturday morning.

It will be determined in all directions, said the spokesman.

It is certain that there is no official level crossing at the point.

The emergency services escorted around 130 passengers from the train after the collision.

A crisis intervention team was also on duty and looked after the train driver and the railway staff.
