A rapper popular in his Swedish homeland was shot dead not far from the center of Stockholm.

As several Swedish media reported unanimously, the 19-year-old Einár was killed by several bullets on Thursday evening in the normally quiet district of Hammarby Sjöstad.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the death of a 19-year-old from being shot at the location but, in accordance with Swedish police practice, did not reveal the victim's name.

Einár, whose real name was Nils Kurt Erik Einar Grönberg, had already been the victim of an attempted kidnapping last year.

His rival Yasin, with whom Einár was publicly in dispute, is said to have been behind the crime.

Yasin was sentenced to ten months in prison for the attempted kidnapping last July.

According to the police spokeswoman, the police were alerted about the shooting around 11 p.m.

Despite first aid, the 19-year-old's life could no longer be saved.

The police are investigating murder and several witnesses are being questioned, the spokeswoman said.

Sweden has suffered from an increase in gang crime for a number of years.

Einár's songs were also often about a life of crime, drugs and weapons.

He had his breakthrough in 2019 when his single "Katten i trakten" (The cat in the area) landed on 1st place in Sweden.

Einár has received several music awards, including the Swedish Grammy.

"Again a young life has been wiped out, and I know that it meant a lot to many young people," said Prime Minister Stefan Löfven of the Swedish news agency ITT.

According to media reports, Einár was under protection.
