Karim Benzema does not have to fear a prison sentence in the trial of attempted extortion with a sex video.

The public prosecutor demanded ten months probation and a fine of 75,000 euros for the French national soccer player in Versailles on Thursday.

A verdict is expected on Friday.

The Real Madrid striker has not yet appeared in court.

The 33-year-old is accused of being involved in the attempted blackmailing of his then national team-mate Mathieu Valbuena in 2015.

Benzema rejects this.

Four other men are charged with attempted extortion.

They are said to have used a sex tape from Valbuena to demand money.

They got their hands on the video while transferring data to a new cell phone.

"No Good Samaritan"

Benzema had contacted Valbuena about the video.

On behalf of a childhood friend, he is said to have urged his teammate to meet the blackmailer's money demand.

Benzema, on the other hand, asserts that he only wanted to do Valbuena a favor with good advice.

"Benzema is not a good Samaritan who wanted to help," said prosecutor Segolene Mares: "He wanted to pave the way for the blackmailers through negotiators to get the money."

The scandal rocked the French national team six years ago, and both Benzema and Valbuena had to leave the team.

Benzema has now been pardoned again by national coach Didier Deschamps.
