Former Italian Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini appears on Saturday 23 October before the court in Palermo, Sicily, for the case of the “Open Arms” relief ship prevented from docking on the island of Lampedusa in August 2019.

During this first hearing, after a postponement on September 15, he will have to answer to the accusation of kidnapping 147 migrants.

In the summer of 2019, when he was in charge of the Interior in the first Conte government, he refused to the rescue ship of the Spanish NGO Open Arms access to an Italian port.

The boat had wandered for nearly three weeks at sea. About twenty civil parties were formed.
