• Cancer The Amancio Ortega Foundation donates 280 million to Health to buy ten teams of a cutting-edge treatment

  • Valencia A hospital has disabled equipment donated by Amancio Ortega due to an "administrative problem"

The

Amancio Ortega Foundation

has donated a total of 280 million euros to the Ministry of Health for the purchase of ten

proton therapy

equipment

, one of the most advanced techniques for the treatment of cancer because it is particularly effective with tumors that are difficult to access or that are located in sensitive places, thus shortening the times and avoiding a good part of the secondary effects of other techniques. However, the start-up of the machines is much more complex than pressing a power button, to the point that bureaucratic obstacles still have other similar donations that the Foundation made in the past blocked.

This means that the different administrations will also have to do their part to make the operation of the new equipment a reality, which requires investment for its installation or for the hiring and training of the personnel who will use it. The

Hospital La Fe de Valencia

will be one of the centers that will be made with a proton therapy team, despite the fact that the administrative bureaucracy keeps one of the equipment donated in its day by the owner of Inditex paralyzed in another hospital in the city.

The current one, therefore, is not the first millionaire donation made by the businessman for public health. The current agreement with the Ministry establishes that the Foundation will bear the cost of the acquisition of the equipment (they will go to

Vizcaya, Barcelona, La Coruña, Seville, Malaga, Madrid, Gran Canaria and Valencia

), the software, the equipment dosimetry, the camera equipment and the training service of the clinical hospital.

In the case of the team that will call at La Fe de Valencia, the Ministry of Health directed by Ana Barceló will have to pay for its installation and start-up, provide human resources, take care of the training plan for the use of the equipment, pay for its maintenance. and take on patients from other communities without access to this technology, which today is only available in Spain through

private healthcare

. Specifically, the only two proton therapy teams that exist in the country are in Madrid and are owned by Quirónsalud and the Clínica Universidad de Navarra.

The paradox is that the Hospital Clínico de Valencia is currently unable to work with a

Gamma Knife radiosurgery machine

valued at 3.5 million euros, according to sources from the Health Department itself, who hope that it can be activated "soon". Last May the alarms went off when it was learned that the request for a building permit "was misplaced" in the Valencia City Council, as municipal sources justified the delay at the time. In other words, the Hospital had been waiting for more than a year for the consistory led by Compromís and the PSOE to process a license that would allow it to undertake the necessary works to house the equipment donated by Amancio Ortega in its facilities. It had been announced in December 2019.

But it was not until last June when the license was finally granted and, in fact, the works are already finished, although the device still does not work. Why? The reason now is the need to subject the equipment to a

calibration

. Health sources explain to this newspaper that one of the two accelerators of the Clinic is already operational, although the second "is fully installed and finishing the process of previous measurements." These measurements are carried out by physicists to guarantee the safety of the devices, so they are mandatory before putting the equipment into operation as required by law.

So, considering the precedent, Health does not give a specific date for the start-up of the new proton therapy equipment. On the part of the Conselleria stands out, that yes that "will allow not only to improve the accessibility of patients to this therapy, both in the short and medium term", but will also facilitate "clinical research and technological development related to this type treatment ".

It must be taken into account that proton therapy is a special modality of radiotherapy that uses protons instead of X-rays, which means that the radiation is produced in a more localized way, with a better distribution of the dose and less irradiation of surrounding healthy tissue. For this reason, this technology is especially indicated for patients with long survival and, especially, in children. It is used mainly in the

treatment of ocular, spinal, skull base and some brain tumors

.

The agreement between the Ministry of Health and the Amancio Ortega Foundation states that the price of the acquisition of the equipment will be advanced by Health, charged to four years in the General State Budgets (PGE), although the total cost for the public coffers will be "zero euros" thanks to the donation.
