Freezing Point Special Issue No. 1238

The entry and exit of an Internet celebrity

Leave the network

On the 18th day of the interview, my interviewee announced that he would "retire from the Internet."

Two days later, she deleted all the works on the short video platform.

There are more than two versions of the story I interviewed.

In the first version, Zhou Ling (pseudonym), a post-95 girl who is 1.5 meters tall, drives a 16.5 meter long semi-trailer, beautiful and sassy.

She was born in Dashan, Yiliang County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province. At the age of 16, in order to pay off the gambling debt owed by her brother, she was sold to another family as a wife by her patriarchal parents.

She suffered three domestic violence, the most serious of which was when she returned to her mother's house and lay for half a month. When the child was two years old, she fled the mountain and left the province to work alone.

After meeting her husband Cheng Xing (a pseudonym), a truck driver, she drove a truck with her husband to save money for buying a house and a car.

But just a few months after the new car was bought, the two had a conflict over raising the child in her first marriage. The direct fuse was that Zhou Ling carried Cheng Xing on his back and bought a children's bicycle for 200 yuan for the child.

For the sake of her children, Zhou Ling chose to divorce.

This version is Zhou Ling's narrative.

Two years ago, her life story was made into a documentary by an Oscar-winning director.

In September of this year, she readily agreed to my interview invitation.

Normally, she would drive a 700-kilometer high-speed section from Taizhou, Zhejiang to Quanzhou, Fujian, all night. After dawn, she changed shifts with her partner's master. She climbed onto the slab in the car to cut videos, broadcast live, and sleep.

Every time the wheel ran over one meter, the dowry she saved for herself and the alimony she saved for her son became thicker.

She stayed up all night and earned 450 yuan.

During the two weeks I was in contact with Zhou Ling, she called me "niu", even though I was 5 years older than her, a half taller than her.

She is more enthusiastic and talkative than I thought.

This is usually an interview that we can meet but not seek.

I went out of the car with her all night, sang and ate hot strips on the highway at midnight, and she recalled the "important moments and choices" she thought.

"Life is that parents are born and live by themselves."

In the dark, she held the steering wheel and sang loudly, "Hold your head down, look forward to the day, and accept all the ridicule. Toward the wind, embrace the rainbow, and move forward bravely..." At that moment, I felt that she herself was more than what I saw in the video. moving.

Zhou Ling rents a house in Taizhou, except for typhoon days, she rarely sleeps in the house for one night.

We cook together in her rental room.

There are 6 gas tanks in the public kitchen. She digs a large spoonful of solidified lard from the aluminum basin and puts it in the hot pot, bursting out the mixed aroma of onion, ginger and garlic.

The sink for washing vegetables was blocked. She told me to hide away. She squatted by the pipe and unplugged the plastic pipe at the connection with her bare hands. The sewage poured over her feet, "It's all right," she turned her head and informed me happily.

In the public kitchen filled with oily smoke, Zhou Ling talked to me about women's economic independence, family and marriage life.

She didn't want me to take pictures for this moment because "feel the environment is too bad."

"When I buy the house, please come back as a guest."

"She lives enthusiastically, like a little sun." The colleagues who interviewed her and I exchanged their first impressions of her.

Her story is suitable for making a video.

She can sensitively feel the changes in the number of fans. Even when we are eating, she manually monitors her "Internet public opinion" in real time.

When the number of fans suddenly increased, there must have been a video about her reposted from the media. She wanted to listen to the other party's commentary again, and she was open to the negative comments.

"Under her unstinting appearance, is there anything to fear? In the freight industry dominated by men, what is the motivation for her to stand inside? What does she desire and pursue?" The interview notebook recorded Confused at the end of my second interview, I decided to find people around her.

She has few friends. I try to find the people she mentioned in the interview—her father, ex-husband, sister, media people who interviewed her, and a corporate PR that she was "stunned to speechless". Director.

Unexpectedly, the story fell into one "Rashomon" after another.

External information pieced together another version of the story.

Zhou Ling was not "sold" by her family.

Like other early-married girls in the village, a matchmaker came to talk with her. After getting along with her first husband for more than a month, she married and then went to Zhejiang to work with her husband's family.

Her father told me that he never knew about her domestic violence.

Her sister told me that she learned that "the little girl was beaten by her husband's family" after watching the documentary.

Her ex-husband Cheng Xing told me that they did quarrel about the children in her first marriage, but the divorce was because the woman made a principled mistake in the marriage.

The marriage did not end peacefully. The two had deliberately reunited, and they also posted a short video on the short video platform.

Cheng Xing said that in order to collect more fan rewards, he cooperated with Zhou Ling's request to pretend to divorce on the Internet-not to enter her live broadcast room, remove the nickname "Husband so and so", "What do others ask you? , You all say what she said is true."

There is overlap between the two editions. She comes from deep in the mountains of Yunnan, which is very poor. Her family prefers boys to girls, and she only studied until the first grade of junior high school.

She is diligent, able to endure hardships, worked as a dishwasher, car washer, and assembled parts on the assembly line of an electronics factory.

Later, driving a large truck gave her attention and a relatively decent income.

Outside interviews broke down the trust between me and Zhou Ling at a certain moment.

I wondered whether to continue this topic.

Before leaving, I was attracted by her "story", but life is always outside the story.

I think of what the media person Wang Kailing said, sometimes “to do news is to deal with the diseases of this era. We are all patients of the era. To a large extent, interviews are mutual inquiry between patients” and “send a person back to him. Only by not isolating and expelling this person can we understand the significance of this incident to the life of the times".

get away

Zhou Ling is 25 years old, with an oval face and a loud voice. Laughter can penetrate a carriage.

She is short and can only sit in the front half of the driver's chair, with a pillow tucked between her waist and the back of the chair.

She leaned forward and stepped on the clutch, pushing the manual gear lever with 12 gears with her right hand, giving the impression that "she is standing on the clutch", and the 16.5-meter-long semi-trailer "run" under her command. .

Approaching 12 o'clock in the middle of the night, I carried my backpack and climbed onto the 4.2-meter-high cab of the semi-trailer.

The food pockets containing spicy strips, apples, pears and grapefruits, and the big red iron hand-carrying stereo have already boarded the car ahead of time. In order to make it easier for me to shoot the video more clearly, she stepped on the front beam of the car and wiped the block with a rag. When she tried to "wave" the windshield, she could only wipe two-thirds of the glass when she stood on tiptoe.

Also because of my arrival, she went back to the rental house to drew light makeup, lipstick, her hair carefully braided, and the ends of her hair were clamped with bow clips.

The whole city has fallen asleep, and Zhou Ling and I, as well as her card friends, set off one after another.

She has been driving this route for more than half a year. She can accurately remember every bifurcation, about 700 kilometers of roads do not need to be navigated at all, and can remind me to sit firmly in the potholes of the road.

Most of the logistics vehicles encountered on the expressway are Zhou Ling’s "old acquaintances". She and these card friends occasionally interact with each other under Douyin, and the content is nothing more than "I saw you on a certain road today" and "Departed together at night in a certain service area." See".

They honked their whistle when overtaking, and the "dolphin sound" occasionally broke through the silence of the night.

"Female truck drivers" are not common in this industry.

In 2016, the "Survey Report on the Employment Status of Truck Drivers" issued by the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing showed that the proportion of female drivers in China was about 1%; in 2020, the "China Truck Drivers Survey Group" estimated that female drivers accounted for about 4.2 %.

Zhou Ling ridiculed herself as "flight mode when on high speed".

"Speed" is always associated with "guts", "technology" and "fuel consumption".

A semi-trailer truck with a fast speed and a carrying capacity of 40 tons has to "drink fuel hard". Drivers are most afraid of sudden braking. Sometimes the front of the car is braked and the body will rush up by inertia. "The entire cab is'pushed' flat. She doesn't care about these, "fast" is her unique "identification" among card friends.

She talked about how she got along with "Dark Night".

She said that the most difficult part of her life was the period of domestic violence, "because there was no hope in sight."

After the last domestic violence, she went to the town to buy a train ticket. The money was saved while working as a small worker on the construction site to move cement.

She escaped in one night.

The two-year-old son was already asleep. She piled up the pillows and quilts to keep him away.

She walked one and a half hours to the town at night. The next day, she changed into newly bought clothes and sneakers in the town, and then took the bus to the railway station in the next county and embarked on the train to Hangzhou.

She can tell every scene and detail in the story in detail and full of appeal.

The reporter who interviewed her commented that she was "able to talk" and was "moved by her vitality."

She is also good at using "imagery".

She wants to buy a "Jiefang" brand truck, because "liberation" has a special meaning to her, "symbolizing her own freedom".

On the road, she met an island in the lake. She said, "I am like that island."

Our car was wrapped in the night.

Speaking of this, it was already more than two o'clock in the night. There were fewer cars on the road, and the sleepiness was overwhelming. The makeup on Zhou Ling's face was no longer delicate. She let go of the speaker and sang to the tune.

"Remember the date of the day you left home?" I asked.

  "Can not remember."

"You can remember the date of registration at the driving school. Why can't I remember the time of this very important'escape' in the fate? About a few months?" I was curious.

"Because so many things have happened, one by one," she replied.

Later, I saw another version of what she told the author of the "Girls Don’t Be Afraid" public account: While her husband and mother-in-law were out, she slipped into town wearing a set of clothes and hid in a snack bar as a waiter. The monthly salary is 600 yuan.

Fearing to be found, as soon as he got the money, he ran to Hangzhou without stopping.

The only overlap is her destination and result, she escaped the marriage in the mountains.

sense of security

I met the truck driver Cheng Xing in 2018. She sent a private message to Cheng Xing’s short video account, “I was fascinated by the way he was driving a big car.” In addition to showing off his car skills, Cheng Xing occasionally posted a few "starring" funny things. Video, "This industry is all male except for the nuts."

Later, Zhou Ling was not ashamed, and smiled towards the camera and said, "I was chasing him."

She was working in Jiaxing at that time, assembling parts in a factory that produces Yuba.

She flew to Changsha to see Cheng Xing. Cheng Xing didn't mind her past, which made her feel safe.

She returned to Jiaxing and quit her job, retired the rented house, sold things that could be exchanged for money, and became the "sister-in-law in high heels" in Cheng Xing's car.

Cheng Xing was born in a rural village in Zunyi, Guizhou, and went out after graduating from junior high school.

His mind is alive.

When I met Zhou Ling, he had been in the transportation industry for nearly 10 years.

He found that the skills learned in the driving school must be more "practical", which is a "business opportunity".

He registered a consulting service company to help newbies practice cars, and his income was several times that of driving.

Zhou Ling was the first girl who insisted on confessing to him.

Cheng Xing met Zhou Ling for the first time, "The first feeling is that this girl is so short." But he likes Zhou Ling's outgoing and cheerful personality, which complements his personality.

He taught Zhou Ling to drive.

"Wow, people passing by at that time said,'That's a female driver.'" Zhou Ling had never experienced the feeling of being noticed.

Zhou Ling is no longer satisfied with her addiction, she wants to drive with a license.

This story later added some dramatic plots.

She told more than one media that she went to sign up with Cheng Xing behind her back. Cheng Xing knew after taking the exam. Cheng Xing was angry and ignored her for a few days.

Later, Cheng Xing told me that it was he who took Zhou Ling to the driving school in Guizhou and he did not agree at first, because he knew that driving was hard and his shoulders and lumbar spine had symptoms.

But Cheng Xing also yearned for the two to move their lives into the same car, like couples on other trucks, with pots and pans. "If she can drive (the car), she can occasionally hold hands."

"I don't want to bring you a baby at home." In the documentary, Zhou Ling mentioned her plan for life after marriage.

Netizens praised her for “not being a housewife, and still maintaining female independence and social connection after marriage”.

During the interview, I learned from her original intention that her "not at home" is to be with her husband at all times and to guard her marriage.

Zhou Ling became a veritable co-pilot.

From Henan to Guangxi and Chongqing to Shanghai, the couple drove over half of China.

When they ran the route from Chongqing to Shanghai together, they did not rent a room. They went back and forth for 4 days to collect water and wash their hair in the high-speed service area. They all lived in a car without air-conditioning.

Later, she started to drive a car independently, running a different long-distance route with her husband.

She goes back and forth every two days. Cheng Xing's journey is a little far away, and it takes 3 days. The couple can only meet once a week and stay together for 6 hours.

I chatted with several card friends who have followed Zhou Ling for a long time. They said that the story of Zhou Ling and Cheng Xing was once a good story in the card circle.

They were impressed by a video released by a self-media: In the dark night, two trucks turned on their lights, and their heads stopped facing each other. The young couple got out of the cars and looked a little tired. Cheng Xing patted Zhou Ling’s head, She embraced her.

"It would be perfect to marry such a wife with a sports car." A card friend left a message under the video.

After driving the truck, Zhou Ling posted a video of her driving on the Internet. Unlike those dark-skinned truck drivers who shaved their heads, even in the car, her hair had to be knitted in a variety of ways, wearing short skirts and bows. .

She affixed flower decorations on the edge of the car window, potted plants in the car, and a yellow Pikachu doll sitting in the passenger seat with a seat belt.

She has never seen Pikachu's "starring" cartoon "Pokémon", but she likes its appearance.

Zhou Ling's fans soon surpassed Cheng Xing.

She broadcasts live broadcasts and accepts gifts from netizens in the live broadcast room. Gifts can be exchanged for cash. A live broadcast "can earn five or six hundred."

She called herself single on the Internet, “because there are more people writing gifts like this.” The couple quarreled frequently.

"He said that I was married, and he still said that I was single, and he was cheating other people's money." Zhou Ling thought, "I can't talk about cheating. I pay, and if he can talk about his conscience, I didn't spend this money alone."

Cheng Xing said that the quarrel between two people usually ends with his compromise.

He ended his identity as an "invisible person on the Internet" at the end of 2019 when Zhou Ling became popular. Cheng Xing, as an "element" in the story, appeared in reports about Zhou Ling.

Popular

On "Double 11" in 2019, Zhou Ling became popular on the Internet.

An e-commerce company made a communication plan, "recording vivid, touching, and true "Double 11" stories in six dimensions." Zhou Ling was selected to represent the "logistics" dimension.

At that time, she drove trucks for a certain express company's carrier and occasionally posted videos of her driving on the Internet. She had 10,000 or 20,000 fans.

On November 13, the micro-documentary about Zhou Ling reached 6.12 million views on Weibo.

Subsequently, many media also noticed this "little girl driving a big truck" and followed up for interviews.

Zhou Ling had more contact with the public relations department of the express company.

She mentioned to me that the courier company had offered to sign a contract to pack her. She was unwilling, because "you lost your freedom when you were signed." She talked about how she pierced the lies of the person in charge of public relations, and "stiffly" blocked her. The contact information of the other party.

I found the person in charge of public relations Lin Xue (a pseudonym) she mentioned, and the story also appeared in different versions.

Lin Xue recalled that Zhou Ling hoped that the company could sign her contract and pay a certain monthly fee.

"She really wants to turn herself into an Internet celebrity. She is trying to create a persona that has become a strong woman through her own hard work, and then hopes to realize it through such a process," Lin Xue analyzes.

"We don't have the strength to spend a lot of money to sign an Internet celebrity, but we can help her find such an MCN agency to sign her."

Lin Xue provided me with some of their communication records.

Zhou Ling hopes to become a regular employee of the express company.

But the company is a franchise system, the driver comes from the carrier, the company has not signed any courier driver.

  Zhou Ling rejected other positions.

"I still drive, because people like me to drive a big car. If I do other things, they are not interested." "I want to sign a contract with you, and I will decide on the terms. I want to make the advertisement good. Even louder, you have to listen to me in driving. If you have to talk about it, just talk about it. If you don’t have to talk about it, I won’t force it."

Later, the cooperation was not negotiated, Zhou Ling blacked Lin Xue, and Zhou Ling explained that she “hates people who threaten and play tricks with me”.

The details of many stories show the appearance of a "mock doll".

After contacting Cheng Xing, I also got a different version of the story from Cheng Xing.

Zhou Ling seemed calm, "What good things can I say to the other party after the divorce?" "Let him show evidence." The next day, her circle of friends blocked me.

She said she did not want to explain the "lie" about Cheng Xing, "I don't think it is necessary (response)".

"The temperature in Chongqing is more than 30 degrees. Sleeping in the car, it is conceivable that I have suffered a lot from being with him."

She tried to reconcile with me.

"I cook for you, not because you are a reporter. Maybe I have no friends and want to make more friends. As you know, I am in the cart every day, and few girls are willing to play with me."

Although I was still blocked by her from the circle of friends, I was also moved by this passage.

Primitive family

The local almost forgot about this person.

Her ID and Hukou are in another name, and that is her original name.

Zhou Ling was born in a natural village on the mountain in Yiliang County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province. She is the fifth child in the family. She has 1 brother and 3 sisters.

Not only is the entire village surrounded by mountains, but the entire Zhaotong City is in the Wumeng Mountain area. 96.3% of the city is a mountainous area with severe rocky desertification.

Zhou Ling's home is halfway up the mountain, and the school is at the foot of the mountain on the other side of the mountain. She gets up at 4:30 every morning when she goes to school and walks the mountain road for 3 hours to the school.

Like the children in the village, she did small farm work, and Zhou Ling still had the scar left on her left hand when she was scratched when cutting pig grass.

She is familiar with the things in the crop fields: potatoes start to grow in October of the lunar calendar, and the potatoes will sprout after the Spring Festival. In March, corn will be planted in the ditch next to the potatoes. Plant in the nest vacated by potatoes.

"Like our hometown, there are many families with many children. In order to make their lives more generous, parents let their 15 or 16-year-old daughters marry too many people, not just our family." Zhou Ling's sister told me.

Regarding her marriage, Zhou Ling's father and Zhou Ling have different versions.

My father told me that an accountant in the town came to match and gave him and his wife 2,000 yuan each.

The man’s family is on another mountain in the town. The family conditions are good, and his son works in the mine.

In her story, she was sold by her parents, her elder brother lost his gambling, and debt collectors came to the house.

New Year's pigs could not be sold, so they told the 15-year-old her a family relationship and gave 6,000 yuan as a gift.

A reporter who interviewed her told me, "(During the interview) she said several different numbers for the gift money."

For this family, a few thousand yuan in 2010 is a lot of money.

Zhou Ling said, “People have washing machines and refrigerators, which is rare. At that time, our homes were still washing clothes by hand.” Before the complete victory in poverty alleviation, 10 of the 11 counties in Zhaotong City were national-level poor counties. 7 deeply impoverished counties.

In her narrative, on another mountain, she was doing the same farming work as before she got married. When the town's construction site was short of manpower, she went to work on a motorcycle with a woman from the same village on a motorcycle.

What she did the most was to move cement upstairs, earning 30 yuan a day.

I followed the short video accounts of some local women who were about the same age as Zhou Ling.

Some parents work outside during the year, and some are like migratory birds. They fly to Hangzhou, Cixi, Jiaxing, Huzhou and other places in Zhejiang during the slack season, and rush home during the busy season to harvest potatoes and plant sea pepper seedlings.

It is the children who can hold them.

"If it weren't for pregnancy, who would stay at home every day, the day of making money and spending it on their own, wouldn't it be fragrant?" Even if "I can't afford Haidilao, I haven't bought clothes that cost more than 300 yuan", the outside world "is still comfortable".

They summarized the days of bringing a baby at home like this, waking up early to catch up and going to farm work when the weather is cool, and returning home, "holding the child in their left hand and a mobile phone with a price of less than 1,000 yuan in their right hand, shooting videos that will never be popular."

There are always a few to dozens of replies under their videos.

In addition to foreigners who work abroad, there are also some ridicules, confession, and seeking associations of the opposite sex.

Zhou Ling bid farewell to such a day in 2015.

In the new environment, she concealed the experience of getting married and having children.

She changed her name, and later added attributes such as "truck driver" and "big truck driver" to the online nickname.

She obtained a C1 driver's license in June 2016.

"Because someone introduced me to a partner and wanted to buy a car." That relationship ultimately came to no avail.

She now earns 13,000 yuan a month by driving and has "complete control" over her income.

After divorcing Cheng Xing, she bought the latest Apple mobile phone in installments, and after driving an A2 driver's license, she rewarded herself with a Longines watch worth more than 9,000 yuan.

This year’s birthday was on the highway, and the three-link gold bracelet on her right wrist was a birthday gift from her.

After leaving her first marriage, Zhou Ling has not returned home for 3 years, nor has she contacted her children.

In May 2018, she and Cheng Xing registered their marriage.

According to her, she sent a bank card to her father in advance, with 10,000 yuan deposited in it.

Then his father delivered the household registration book to her in the town.

For her wedding with Cheng Xing, 10 trucks were used as wedding cars.

The woman did not come to a relative, nor did Zhou Ling's parents.

I asked Zhou Ling's sister, "If you didn't know that she was domestically abused, it would be strange when she received an invitation to marry Cheng Xing. Why did you get married again?"

"I'm not very clear, I don't know where to start." The other party replied that the contact between her and the younger sister was "a little more this year."

When the documentary was filmed, they returned to the mountains.

My brother’s new house has been built, and my parents live with my brother’s family.

She acted like a baby in front of her parents, took them to the town to buy clothes, and kissed her father generously in front of the camera.

The filming team also went to the school her son attended.

During the break, she called the child to the door of the classroom and hugged the child, "Yaoer, I am mom, you don’t recognize me?" The child looked indifferent, no tears flowed down, and she repeatedly wiped the corners of the child’s eyes with her hands. Face.

the truth

The sky was getting brighter and our car drove into the city.

Zhou Ling cheered up, because the city is more "dangerous" than the highway-you will drive into the restricted area if you are not careful, the roadside of the logistics park is easy to be scraped off by the roof of the electric wire, and there is a narrow turning area.

"Who is the most important person to you?" We chatted at lunch.

She looked embarrassed, shook her head and said, no.

After the documentary was broadcast, her fans rose again.

When I interviewed her, she already had nearly 240,000 fans.

She accepted several interviews, and some netizens commented in private messages that she was "a mother who abandoned her child."

"I said that one of your eyes saw me abandon the child. I didn't contact me because I didn't have contact information. And although I have been working and earning money, I haven't saved any money," she added, "I'm afraid of being caught by them. Then, she wrote in the personal data column, "No more media interviews."

She told me that "many internet celebrities have teams", and she has only one person and no one can discuss.

A card friend told her in the tone of a person who came over, "Find a few people who have gone through these things to sit down and study the road in the future. Don't dare to mess up."

"You know how popular people are." She is afraid of cyber violence.

She told me the example of Qiao Renliang's parents and Lin Shengbin who lost his family in the fire. "Netizens can dig too deeply."

In the first interview, we talked about the influence of the media, and she bluntly said, "It would be nice if the People's Daily came to interview me."

She asked if I ever interviewed a post-95 volunteer who rushed to Wuhan during the epidemic last year and was later commended.

Those honors were the same as the other's more than 2 million fans, which made her envious.

She hoped that I could help introduce a young soldier who wanted to marry a "brother soldier".

"Brother Bing should be very qualified, preferably a warm guy. But I am afraid that people will look down on me. I save money and buy a house. After he retires, I can drive to pick him up."

Zhou Ling cares about the comments of netizens, "I want to make my reputation better".

She closed the live streaming function, and did not compete with other anchors.

One of her glasses sold well, with more than 3,000 pairs sold.

In our chat, "my fan" replaced "my friend". After she got her A2 driver's license, she wanted to "thank the 130,000 fans and family for their support."

"Since I don't believe it, I don't have to continue talking with you, thank you." She said.

On September 24, she announced that she would “retire from the Internet”. In the “Exit Note”, she stated that sharing her story on the Internet is to “spread positive energy”-“What you want depends on your own hands. Creation, including female friends who face domestic violence, must be brave (to) zero tolerance, and reject domestic violence." But because I realized that "our own power is too small", so "the Internet is muddy water, so don't mix ( And)".

And I think "real" is the most powerful.

My feelings for her have also become complicated and difficult to express from the "particular love" when I first saw her.

Before submitting the manuscript, I changed her real name in the article to a pseudonym, hoping not to hurt her.

Because this is not just a girl's story, each of us may see our weaknesses in the story.

Her circle of friends was silently restored to me and closed again.

I didn't contact her again. During the short "window period" in the circle of friends, I only saw a few heads of garlic planted in half a plastic bottle, growing hard.
