Mount Aso, located in Japan, erupted on Wednesday.

This volcano, one of the most active in the country, 1,592 m high, threw up ash at an altitude of 3,500 m, causing hikers to move away in haste from this tourist site.

The eruption blew up rocks after a spectacular explosion filmed by CCTV cameras.

No injuries were immediately reported.

Authorities have warned locals and tourists not to approach, as hot gas and ash escalated and stones rolled down the slopes.

Pay attention to flows, rocks and gas

The authorities notably verified that hikers had not been trapped.

Images showing dozens of tourist vehicles and coaches parked in the parking lot of a nearby museum, offering a clear view of the volcano, were released by Japanese media.

Torrents of ash flowed from Mount Aso towards the museum but did not reach the site.

For those nearby, "beware of large boulders and flows of pyroclastic material," an official with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said at a press conference.

Many active volcanoes in the archipelago

"Caution is required, even in remote areas," he added, mentioning possible toxic gases.

“The wind can carry not only ashes but also pebbles.

The last time the JMA set the same alert level for Mount Aso (3 on a scale of 5) was in 2016.

The Japanese archipelago is located on the Pacific "ring of fire", where many earthquakes occur.

Located on the island of Kyushu, Mount Aso is one of the hundreds of active volcanoes under close surveillance in the country, including Mount Fuji.

The JMA had recently warned of an increase in volcanic activity in the region.
