NASA explores the Milky Way with a new telescope

The US space agency (NASA) announced that it is scheduled to launch a telescope to study the formation of the Milky Way galaxy, which includes Earth in 2025.

A panel of scientists and engineers selected a gamma-ray telescope known as the Compton Spectrometer and Imager, among 18 proposals for a new telescope mission that NASA collected in 2019.

"The Compton instrument will answer questions about the origin of chemical elements in our Milky Way, which are the same basic components that make up Earth itself," said Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA associate administrator.

A NASA statement said the mission would cost about $145 million, not including the launch itself.
