One percent of the world's oceans lack oxygen.

These areas are found off the coasts of Africa, Central America and North America and are called minimum oxygen zones (OMZ).

To understand the issues linked to these little-known spaces, the Tara Océan foundation goes there to study their particularities and their impacts.

Scientists explain that these worsen as these areas expand: “What is happening now, more and more frequently, is that they are pushing organisms towards the coast and there are mass deaths of natural resources such as anchovy, sardines, squid and others.

Although macroorganisms cannot live in these environments, they are teeming with microorganisms that do not need oxygen.

Studying them can advance research: “It can help us understand who lives there, what they do, how they can make sure to survive in such extreme conditions… But also how they can help us by recycling greenhouse gases.
