• From October 18 to 20, the Bourse de commerce - Pinault Collection presents the show “Baiser Mortel”.

  • An original creation by Low Jack and Lala & which revisits the codes of the musical.

  • Accompanied by choreographer Cecilia Bengolea, the two artists combine song and dance in a musical show where love and death come together.

The evening of the dress rehearsal on Saturday October 16, the hall is full, darkness and silence win over the audience, the show will begin. Behind the bay window which separates the stage from the back room of the auditorium of the Bourse de commerce-Pinault Collection, a phantasmagorical apparition makes its entrance. “When death descends on Earth, what is there to fear in Heaven? She says in the distance, shrouded in a misty dawn light. The first electronic musical notes resonate and by the time the eye acclimates, the viewer recognizes rapper Lala & ce. Then comes BabySolo33, a young artist from Bordeaux, who crosses the front of the stage singing this time, and captures the attention of the spectators with her high pitched and bewitching voice, dragging behind her a long braid of several meters.

At first glance, the introduction to the

Mortal Kiss

show

looks like a concert.

But as the minutes pass, the show takes on a whole new dimension: the pieces are transformed into stages, the tables are linked as in the theater, embodied not by actors, but by rappers and dancers.

The story of this original creation presented from October 18 to 20?

That of death descended on earth, which finds itself there trapped by love.

A classic theme revisited here in a very special form: the meeting of hip-hop and musical comedy.

The meeting of several universes and multiple disciplines

It is the fruit of the meeting of two musical UFOs: on the one hand Low Jack, composer of electronic music, who signs the staging and the composition of

Baiser Mortel

, and on the other Lala & this, avant-garde rapper with a soaring flow who plays the role of death.

Two artists who met during a performance within the framework of the FIAC (International Contemporary Art Fair), in the Saint-Merry Church in Paris in 2019. “Something happened between us, we were really happy.

We wanted to do a lot more than that, an EP, a record, do the studio and have more time to develop a project together, ”explains the composer a few days before the premiere.

From there, the Stock Exchange comes into play and offers them carte blanche, "a somewhat crazy idea, neither a concert nor a performance", specifies Low Jack.

They then began to dream of a "hybrid dance and music show" and were inspired by a film from the 1930s.

Death Takes a Holiday

by Mitchell Leisen.

The two artists take care of the musical side and are joined by the Argentinian choreographer Cecilia Bengolea for the dance component. “We wanted someone to understand what we are doing, who is not purely in contemporary dance, but able to dance to the urban,” says Low Jack. Most of his dancers are from Jamaica or have an affinity with dancehall and reggaeton. Not necessarily in rap, but there are bridges. This attraction for these rhythms was a bit our common point between the three of us. The choreographer invites the Ukrainian Katrin Wow, the French Elodie Chan and the Jamaican Craig Black Eagle to dance in the piece. For her part, Lala & ce invites several artists to share the stage with her, the singers Jäde and BabySolo33, as well as the rappers Rad Cartier and Le Diouck. At last, the young designer Marine Serre, who has been shaking up the fashion world for several years, signs all the costumes.

At the crossroads of theater, music and dance

So many artists, universes and disciplines intertwined in this original show that combines musical comedy and hip-hop.

A cocktail which can however surprise.

"Like what it is possible, answers Lala & this.

But after we did it our way, there are no dialogues that follow a sound, it's not Disney, at all!

There is a lot of music and musical moments translated into dance.

It is an immersion in a world.

"Inspiration is more on the way you tell a story than on the form it takes," adds Low Jack.

On stage, the story is told as much visually as musically. The rappers embody characters and respond to each other in song, the dancers express emotions and underline the action. "What I liked is the staging of the sounds, the fact of not performing as usual," explains Lala & ce. It's a show, there's a story, it's a little more theatrical. Each performer wrote his lyrics and took on his role. A clever mix of music and acting that the artists “naturally” adopted. “Upstream we had taken the party that there would be no acting, that it would not be theatrical, notes Low Jack. Finally we realized that it was important. And all played the game, we even feel that it made them kiff to go on something else. "

For the time being, this original, unprecedented and wildly seductive musical show is still in its infancy.

If the first four dates on the Bourse de commerce were filled in a flash, a tour is not yet in place.

A concept album should be released next year which will feature all the titles of

Baiser Mortel

.
