Storms with heavy rains have caused significant traffic disabilities and floods in Greece.

Hundreds of people had to save themselves on roofs to avoid drowning in their flooded houses.

In Athens alone, the fire brigade had to move out more than 1,400 times on Thursday and Friday night to save people and pump water from flooded houses, the civil defense said.

Hundreds of vehicles got stuck in flooded streets.

The authorities said there were no victims until Friday morning.

Schools and authorities closed

For this reason, the civil defense closed the two main arteries of Athens on the coast and the motorway to the north of Greece on Friday night and until 8 a.m.

"We have to be careful, the danger is great," said the civil protection minister Christos Stylianides on state television. Most schools and all authorities that are not involved with emergency services remained closed on Friday.

In many places "as much water came down as it rains on average over the whole year," said a meteorologist on state television.

There were heavy rains on Friday morning on the holiday islands of Rhodes, Kos, Santorin, Mykonos and in parts of Crete.

The weather office does not expect the weather to improve until Sunday.
