In recent years, the media industry has undergone major changes.

Revenue has declined with increasing digitization, and many advertisers choose social media over newspapers.

Now a new press and media support will be investigated, announces Minister of Culture and Democracy Amanda Lind (MP).

She points out that the media industry has done a lot to adapt to the new market, but that it is not enough.

- All people, regardless of where in the country you live, should have access to a versatile media offer, says Amanda Lind.

An outdated system

Mats Svegfors is given the task of evaluating the current press and media support and developing proposals for new forms of support for the future.

- We still have a support that is fundamentally based on the printed newspaper.

And it is a successive process where we will eventually maneuver ourselves into the fact that it is a different starting point.

It is no longer the printed newspaper that is the mental starting point, says Mats Svegfors.

Strong media throughout Sweden

Today's press and media support has been approved by the EU Commission until 2023. Svegfors' task will be to propose changes to the support that can enter into force no later than 1 January 2024.

- One should not try to say anything about where we should end up.

However, it is very important that we have strong media.

This is the infrastructure of democracy, says Mats Svegfors.

The assignment must be reported no later than 1 June 2022.
