Heavy gunshots rang out on Thursday, October 14, near the Beirut courthouse, as a demonstration by supporters of Hezbollah and the Shiite Amal movement was taking place against Judge Tarek Bitar, in charge of the investigation into the explosions at the port of the Lebanese capital.

According to a hospital source, the shots left at least one dead and several injured.

The tension is maximum in Lebanon where the Lebanese government had to postpone a meeting scheduled for Wednesday due to strong tensions over the investigation into the explosion at the port of Beirut, with pro-Iranian Hezbollah and its allies demanding to relinquish the judge Tarek Bitar instruction.

The Court of Cassation in Lebanon on Thursday rejected complaints lodged by two former ministers against the judge in charge of the investigation into the explosion at the port of Beirut, which allows him to resume his investigations, a judicial source told the AFP.

Tarek Bitar was forced on Tuesday to suspend his investigation pending the verdict of this tribunal, causing the most serious crisis in the Lebanese government since its formation last month.
