Audio 19:30

Algerian demonstrators arrested in Puteaux, west of Paris, during the peaceful demonstration on October 17, 1961. 60 years ago, 30,000 Algerians who came to demonstrate peacefully in Paris were subjected to violent repression.

Official assessment: three dead and sixty wounded, very far from reality according to historians.

"

 Here, we are drowning the Algerians

 ".

The inscription in black paint on the quays of the Seine in Paris has become famous.

A symbol of the Algerian war.

And yet many French people do not know which event it refers to;

the repression of a pacifist demonstration by Algerians on October 17, 1961. 200 to 300 people were killed by the police.

A reality stifled for more than 20 years.
