It's official, Cillian Murphy will play J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's next film, dedicated to the physicist.

The actor of

Peaky Blinders

, one of the filmmaker's favorite actors, will therefore play the "father of the atomic bomb" in this adaptation of the book

American Prometheus: the Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer

, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.

Christopher Nolan will sign the screenplay and produce the film alongside Universal, who has become a partner of the director, angry with Warner.

He will no doubt be keen to show that he still knows how to generate enthusiasm in theaters, after the mixed success of his latest film,

Tenet

.

A release scheduled for July 2023

More good news: the studio has announced the release date of the film.

We know that

Oppenheimer

will be in theaters on July 21, 2023. According to Deadline, this is the niche favored by the studios to release the films of the director of

Interstellar.

It was also during this period that

Tenet came out

.

"We are delighted to be working [alongside Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas] on this exceptional and extraordinary project, and we are grateful to them for their shared passion and commitment to the cinematic experience," said Donna Langley, president of the Universal Filmed Entertainment group.

The contract between the filmmaker and the studios stipulates that no streaming release will be possible during the hundred days following the release date of the feature film.

It was the key point of contention between Christopher Nolan and the Warner, who has released his films simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max since the pandemic.
