Rescue teams have rescued two stranded humpback whales on Argentina's Atlantic coast.

The animals were stranded on the beach in the seaside resort of La Lucila del Mar, around 360 kilometers south of Buenos Aires, as the World Marine Foundation announced on Tuesday (local time).

Around 30 people were involved in the rescue operation, including local residents, members of the civil defense, coast guard officials, firefighters and beach guards.

The first whale was therefore a female humpback whale almost ten meters long and weighing around eight tons.

The second whale, a male around 8.5 meters long and weighing around eight tons, was reportedly stranded a little later.

The rescue teams tried to cover the pectoral fins of the animals with water and allow the whales to breathe.

Finally, they attached ropes to the whale bodies, which were connected to a huge crane.

The whales were hoisted into the water until they could swim again on their own, according to the World Marine Foundation.
