The volcanic island of La Palma, which belongs to Spain, was declared a disaster area on Tuesday.

At the same time, the government in Madrid provided 10.5 million euros in emergency aid for those affected on the Canary Island, as reported by the state TV broadcaster RTVE.

This was intended to finance 107 apartments and the most urgent expenses of the people whose houses were destroyed by the lava.

So far, almost 600 buildings have been destroyed by the red-hot mass.

The number of people who had to leave their homes fell slightly to 5,600 after some residents were allowed to return.

The regional government estimates that the damage will amount to several hundred million euros.

Meanwhile, the lava, which was around 1000 degrees Celsius, pushed further towards the sea, destroying banana plantations and large greenhouses near the coast.

Their plastic sheets and artificial fertilizers stored there caught fire, as can be seen on television pictures.

Because toxic fumes were released, some people had to leave nearby houses, reported the newspaper "La Vanguardia".

There were only a few hundred meters left before the lava flow would pour into the sea on the steep coast.

Since when the lava comes into contact with the salty sea water, poisonous gases mixed with hydrochloric acid can also form, a curfew was maintained for four districts with a total of around 300 residents.

People should keep windows and doors closed.

Air traffic with the island was still suspended.

The only alternative was ferries to the larger neighboring island of Tenerife.

However, long waiting times have been reported.

The volcano in the Cumbre Vieja ridge in the south of the island off the west coast of Africa erupted on September 19 for the first time in 50 years.

Even volcanologists couldn't say how long he would stay active.

It could take weeks or months.
