Venice residents have long complained about day visitors, who spend too little money crowding the city's lake and canals, exacerbating its growing environmental problems.

In its second summer, with fewer visitors and less revenue, the city, which is spread across 118 small islands, is looking forward to a time when it can reclaim its place as one of the world's top tourist destinations, according to Bloomberg News.

After two tourist seasons hit by the coronavirus pandemic, local officials hope residents will be ready to support a radical shift in the city's approach.

Next year, the local government plans to introduce a fee-based reservation system for visitors who do not spend the night in the city.

It is noteworthy that Venice, which is set to celebrate its 1600th anniversary this year, is already collecting traffic information through cell phones and surveillance cameras, and thus, the city is able to track the speed of boats along its 150 canals, dividing one-day visitors by their nationalities, and follow up their movements from one tourist site to another.

"Adding a new reservation system will give us full knowledge of arrivals in advance, and help organize accordingly," said Simon Venturini, a Venice city councilor.

Venturini acknowledges that the result will be a more upscale tourist experience.

But new measures to make visitors pay to enter the city could face challenges from the European Commission, warns Marco Gasparnetti, an MP who opposes the administration led by conservative Mayor Luigi Brugnaro.
