Rare tiger kills gold miner in Indonesia

An endangered Sumatran tiger has killed a gold miner in Indonesia's Jambi province, media reports said Monday.

The Tribunenews.com news site reported that the gold miner, who was called Rasidin, 43, was taking a rest with other workers on Saturday when he was attacked by a tiger in the Mirangin region.

A person who gave his name as Mostarubi was quoted as saying: "The tiger was big but also skinny...Maybe he didn't have enough to eat."

According to the report, other gold miners managed to escape by climbing a mechanical excavator.

It is noteworthy that the Sumatran tiger is the only species of tiger left in Indonesia after the extinction of the Javan tiger and Bali tiger years ago.

Only about 400 Sumatran tigers remain in the wild, and their numbers are dwindling due to poaching and loss of natural habitats due to rapid deforestation in favor of palm oil plantations.
