A large-scale settlement in the Jomon period, the remains of a ditch excavated for about 50 meters were found at the Sannai Maruyama Site in Aomori City, which was registered as a World Heritage Site.

Experts point out that a ditch of this size cannot be achieved without the cooperation of a large number of people, and it is an important relic when thinking about society at that time.

The Sannai Maruyama Site in Aomori City is a large-scale settlement in the Jomon period, about 5900 to 4200 years ago. Therefore, in July, excavations are being continuously conducted as the central archaeological site of the "Hokkaido / Northeastern Jomon Archaeological Sites" registered as a World Heritage Site.

On the 27th, an investigative committee made up of archaeological experts was held privately and reported on the traces of two ditches found on the north side of the village.

According to it, the outer groove of the two is up to about 7 meters wide and about 1 meter deep, and is at least about 50 meters long, with traces of pillars standing side by side on both sides of the groove. It means that it was found.

About this ditch, a member of the Sannai Maruyama Site Excavation Survey Committee, Associate Professor Yo Negishi of the University of Tokyo graduate school said that the ditch does not seem to surround the village, so it is not a "dust" for defense. "In the Jomon period, collaborative work that would dig such a big ditch has never been considered. It seems that people worked together for some purpose, and it is an important remains for thinking about the society at that time." doing.

Remains that increase the value as a World Heritage Site

The Sannai Maruyama Site is a large-scale settlement in the Jomon period, about 5900 to 4200 years ago.

From the ruins, the remains of more than 800 vertical holes were confirmed, and the remains of a large building using six huge wooden pillars with a diameter of about 1 meter were also found, overturning the image of the Jomon period. It is the ruins that triggered it.

The remains of the ditch surveyed this time are located about 70 meters north of the center of the ruins, and two ditches are found side by side with a distance of about 5 meters.

The outer groove is about 50 meters long and the inner groove is about 15 meters long, and in each groove there are traces of pillars standing side by side.

In the Yayoi period, the traces of the ditch found in the village became known as the "Kango Village" surrounded by "dust" for defense, but this time the ditch does not seem to surround the village. It is not considered to be a "dori" for defense, and its purpose is not well understood.

On the other hand, since it is a scale that cannot be created without the cooperation of people, it is possible that the Sannai Maruyama Site Center, which is conducting research, has formed a society in which people in the Jomon period share the work. Is shown again, and it is said that it is a remains that enhances the value as a world heritage that conveys the life of the Jomon period to the present age.
