Between a patriarchal cultural heritage and a reading that discriminates against them, the women of the Mediterranean basin must forge a path of emancipation and equality.

The “Women and Religions in the Mediterranean” conference

held at the

Collège des Bernardins

concluded two years of interdisciplinary meetings on current developments in the field of religion and civil society. This seminar of the Bernardins Research Center was held under the co-direction of

Valentine Zuber

(EPHE-PSL), Dominican Brother

Alberto Ambrosio

(Luxembourg School of Religion & Society) and

Jacques Huntzinger

, former French Ambassador to Israel. It is the rise of religious feminism and mainly of Islamic feminism that is the major fact of recent decades. The question is whether this religious feminism constitutes an effective lever for the construction of an egalitarian society between men and women.

In this report, we will hear the following researchers:

Hakima Fassi Firi

on the status of women in Morocco;

Leïla Tauil

on secular, secular and Islamic feminism in the Maghreb;

Stéphanie Laithier

on the demands in Israel of women from the haredi ultra-Orthodox community who want to participate in political life;

Naël Georges,

who broadens the subject of discrimination between men and women to include religious minorities in Islam, and

Imad Khillo

on honor killings in Jordan and Egypt.

The biography of

Bourguiba

published in 2019 by

Fayard

enriches the reflection of this conference

.

Its author

Bertrand Le Gendre

is our guest.

Back with the former editor-in-chief of Le Monde on the promulgation in 1956 by Bourguiba of the personal status code, a revolution for Tunisian society.
