The seven-day incidence in Germany has fallen again.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on this Thursday morning at 63.1.

The previous day the value was 65, a week ago it was 76.3.

The health authorities in Germany reported 10,696 new corona infections to the RKI within one day.

A week ago, the value was 12,925 infections.

According to the new information, 115 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours.

A week ago there were 68 deaths.

The number of people who died with or with the involvement of a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 93,238.

The RKI has counted 4,171,666 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected.

The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at 3,932,600.

The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was given by the RKI on Wednesday at 1.65.

A weekly or monthly comparison is not possible due to the high number of late registrations.

A nationwide threshold value from when the situation can be viewed critically is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences.

The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.

US approval for booster vaccinations

The US has approved a first corona booster vaccine.

The FDA approved BioNTech / Pfizer's vaccine Wednesday for people over 65 years of age, adults at high risk of developing a serious illness, and those in professions with a high risk of contagion.

They can now have a third dose injected six months after the second vaccination.

Among those at high risk of infection, the FDA included "health care workers, teachers and daycare workers, grocery store workers, and those in homeless shelters or prisons."

It is still unclear when recipients of the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will get a booster.

No booster vaccination for everyone

The decision was expected after an FDA panel of experts voted for it last Friday.

However, contrary to the plans of the American government, the members of the independent vaccination commission refused a basic booster vaccination for everyone from the age of 16.

Among other things, they referred to possible side effects in younger people.

US experts do not agree on the question of the usefulness of booster vaccinations.

Proponents argue that an additional dose of vaccine increases protection against infection with the coronavirus.

This applies in particular in view of the spread of the delta variant and a protective effect of the vaccine which diminishes over time.

Opponents of a booster vaccination, on the other hand, say that two doses of the vaccines from BioNTech / Pfizer and Moderna would already offer sufficient protection.

They also argue that the focus should be on vaccinating unvaccinated people - in the United States, but also in developing countries where there is a shortage of vaccines.

US President Joe Biden only promised to donate 500 million more vaccine doses to poorer countries on Wednesday.

BioNTech and Pfizer want to deliver the vaccine doses at preferential prices.
