• For nearly two decades, the slim has dictated its laws when it comes to jeans.

  • The tight pants could however be abandoned for the baggy which operates a nice

    comeback

    .

  • More generally, pants seem to be loosening their grip more and more.

It may still be a little too early to celebrate, especially since the slim is almost as tough as a bedbug. Since its masterful

comeback

in the 2000s, tight jeans and its rock spirit reigned supreme over the “basics” of our wardrobes, combined with feminine and masculine alike. Either two decades to suffocate in his slim (or worse, his skinny), condemned to breathe in intervals, or to secretly unbutton his fly. But what if his (too) long hours of glory soon come to an end?

Attentive eyes have been observing for several seasons the gradual return of a piece of clothing relegated to the background since the heyday of slim: the baggy.

On social networks with the young generation, but also on the catwalks of the big designers, the extra-wide and low-waisted jeans are resurfacing and redrawing the lines.

More generally, the pants seem to loosen their grip more and more, and we will not complain about it.

A wave on the catwalks

If the reappearance of the trend has been discreetly inviting for several seasons, spotted in particular by

Vogue at the

end of 2020 on celebrities like Bella Hadid or Katie Holmes, the baggy seems to have passed the second in 2021. Renowned claws have offered it nice shots spotlights this summer for their “resort” collections (intermediate collections): paired with a tuxedo jacket at Balmain, or in full oversize looks at Balenciaga. Very recently, the baggy has also paraded on the side of the New York fashion week as at Coach version shorts, or at Molly Goddard in London. And the Parisian fashion week at the end of the month could also confirm the trend.

Cutting ground on the catwalks, the baggy was also "validated" by one of the greatest defenders of tight jeans: Hedi Slimane. In an article titled "Skinny Pants Prophet, Pivots to Baggy Jeans",

W

magazine

noted in July the surprising dubbing of the creator for this garment with the summer collection of Celine.

“An almost seismic change” noted the journalist, for this fashion house worn by Hedi Slimane “aka the designer who almost all by himself popularized the style and the skinny silhouette for men”.

To be let go by his most loyal support, a real blow for the slim.

And a situation all the more ironic since it could be dethroned by the garment that tight jeans itself put in the closet at the start of the new millennium ...

The 90's and 00's in force

“The baggy style first appeared in American prisons,” explains Dinah Sultan, stylist at Peclers, a trend consulting agency.

In the years 1980-90 he slowly integrated into New York hip-hop and typical American brands really took hold.

At the same time, we saw him in another street universe, that of skateboarding and rock ”.

And what about the baggy version 2021?

“I see it more grunge than hip-hop because the jeans are worked in a faded, torn way,” she analyzes.

At Balenciaga they have really trashed the garment, it's patched up, there is really a more trashy culture.

The American baggy, like the Sean John or Fubu brands did, was really much more inspired by

workwear.

, there were big pockets, very visible seams and very raw jeans.

"

So many references to the years 1990-2000 which are particularly popular with the new allies of baggy size, who are among the most influential people - and inevitably very coveted - in the fashion world: Generation Z. “The baggy came back a lot via vintage, which teenagers are very fond of, explains Dinah Sultan. We see a lot of it among young influencers who buy in particular old Levi's 501 in XL and give techniques to shift a button or to belt them. "

On social networks, the baggy style has won over many TikTok users (even giving rise to challenges), including personalities like Charli d'Amelio, the famous American tiktoker who has more than 120 million subscribers.

"TikTok says skinny jeans are gone - here's what to buy instead," even said an Etonline.com article on the subject in early September.

No more doubt, this story is starting to smell downright bad for the slim ...

On the way to comfort?

With the baggy, it is also the gradual return of the low waist and jeans placed delicately on the hips (your belly will thank you), but also inevitably of a change of proportions and amplitude. “It's very sensual when it comes to current women's fashion. We play hyper tight on the top or the very naked (a bra for example), there is a tension that operates between the two. It's a little less provocative in the sense that the slim jeans made everything appear, but there is something a little more mysterious but no less sexy ”, estimates the stylist from Peclers. And if the total 90's look with XXL sweatshirt and dad shoes scares you, nothing prevents you from combining the baggy with heels or a suit jacket.

More generally, a more comfortable style seems to be settling in our locker rooms. Among the trends are cargo pants, mom jeans and bottoms inspired by the world of pajamas, fluid and loose, which free the body and movement. “There are still women and men who like to dress in a sophisticated way, but comfort has become a kind of prerequisite for going to work today. Our ways of life and work are in the midst of hybridization, clothing must follow and must not be restrictive. The health crisis has greatly changed thinking around clothing, ”observes Dinah Sultan. Fans of skinny jeans rest assured, skinny jeans have probably not said their last word. He will come back like a flower one day or another and will once again take pleasure in making us suffer.
