7.00 Two biomarkers are identified that predict an increased risk of death from coronavirus

A group of Brazilian researchers has identified two genetic markers that can indicate which patients are at higher risk of dying after contracting the

coronavirus

and allow doctors to offer them more appropriate treatments.

The biomarkers, detectable in blood tests, are two enzymes whose levels increased significantly more among coronavirus patients who ended up dying than among those who managed to recover, reported the University of Sao Paulo (USP).

The peculiarity of these enzymes was discovered by researchers from USP, the main university in Brazil;

the Brazilian state-run Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), the main health research center in Latin America, and the Mayo Clinic in the United States.

According to the study, the results of which appear in an article published in the latest edition of the international scientific journal

Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy

, the

levels of metalloproteinases

(MMP) 2 and 9 in patients who died from

Covid

were much higher than those registered in

patients.

who contracted the disease and overcame it.

The researchers evaluated the levels of these enzymes in the blood of twenty-five patients hospitalized for

Covid

at a USP university hospital and in twenty-nine healthy people.

The so-called metalloproteinases comprise a family of twenty-five enzymes that act in the degradation of the proteins of the cellular matrix, that is, in the union of cells, to guarantee the permanent removal and renewal of tissues.
