In the case of the missing Gabby Petito, the worst fears seem to have been confirmed: Investigators have found a body in the US state of Wyoming, which is probably the 22-year-old.

"Forensic identification is still ongoing to confirm one hundred percent that we have found Gabby," said Charles Jones of the local FBI at a news conference on Sunday afternoon (local time) in Moose.

However, the human remains would match Petito's description.

Her friend, who had also disappeared in the meantime, remained undetectable.

Petito and her boyfriend had set out on a trip to the United States in the summer.

According to the police, he came back home to Florida alone on September 1, and ten days later Petito's parents reported their daughter as missing.

The case is making waves in the United States - not least because the Florida couple shared numerous pictures and videos from their trip on social networks.

Both of them seem happy.

The FBI's search was particularly focused on the area around Grand Teton National Park.

The last time Gabby's family had contact with her, she was said to have been there.

Over the weekend, investigators searched an area on the eastern border of the park.

The corpse has now also been discovered there.

"Your family has been informed of the find," said FBI investigator Jones.

It is an incredibly difficult time for family and friends.

Jones stressed that it was an ongoing investigation.

Friend also reported missing

What exactly happened to Gabby remains unclear. Someone who might be able to provide answers is her 23 year old boyfriend. However, he had recently kept silent and only communicated through his lawyer. The young man was finally reported missing by his family on Friday. On Tuesday, he should have broken into the Carlton Reserve in Florida, the family told the police. Why the young man was only reported missing days later remained an open question.

In the early Sunday evening (local time), the local police announced that they had stopped the search for the 23-year-old for the day without success.

Petito's family had accused the man of hiding.

North Port Florida Police said they would continue to work with the FBI to find answers.

Petito's friend was previously considered a "person of interest" in connection with Petito's disappearance.

In the course of the investigation, the van that the couple had been using was also examined.

Other impressions on social media

The couple had shared happy pictures of their trip in the converted van online. The two pose on them in front of the impressive landscape of various national parks in the USA. Numerous people took part in Gabby's disappearance on social networks. Quite a few tried to discover clues in the posts as hobby detectives.

However, the image of a police body camera leaves a completely different impression than the pictures of the couple. The police were called to the vehicle of the two in mid-August about a possible domestic violence case. The completely distraught and crying Petito said in the video that she suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder and that an argument had broken out. She also slapped her boyfriend in the face. The police did not file a complaint, but obliged the couple to spend one night separately.
