An “LPO Refuge for Biodiversity” has been created over the entire 11.4 km2 of the territory of the municipality of Monnetier-Mornex-Esserts-Salève (Haute-Savoie), reports

Le Dauphiné Libéré on

 Monday.

The village thus joins the 40,000 refuges in the network of the Bird Protection League and also becomes the first municipality to classify its entire territory as a refuge.

Hunting is therefore now prohibited there.

“This is only the logical continuation of our desire to actively preserve this sector,” explained Frédérique Léone, environmental assistant for the municipality.

As early as 1988, a prefectural biotope protection decree had been issued to protect the rare flora and fauna of Petit Salève.

Then, the entire Salève massif joined the Natura 2000 network.

The LPO will therefore be able to continue working to preserve the sector's biological balance, in particular by installing nesting boxes.

"We have already spotted a population of woodpeckers, but also butterflies and orchids" announced Frédérique Léone.

As for the Federation of Hunters of Haute-Savoie, they have registered as partners in the project, notably by participating in the installation of signs indicating the presence of a refuge.

"Local hunters will also help us to maintain the diversity of our local fauna," the assistant told our colleagues.
