Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said that the election on the 19th was the first election after the amendment to the Hong Kong Basic Law passed by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress to improve the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s electoral system. The principle of "Hong Kong" insists on safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests, and ensuring that the practice of "one country, two systems" is stable and far-reaching.

Carrie Lam pointed out that under the improved electoral system, the Election Committee has important functions, including the nomination and election of the Chief Executive, the nomination of candidates for the Legislative Council election, and the election of 40 members of the Legislative Council.

The Election Committee, composed of 1,500 people from 40 sub-sectors, is broadly representative and consistent with the principle of balanced participation. The political platforms they put forward during the election process and their interactions with the citizens all demonstrate their commitment to society.

The voting results also reflect the support of members of various sub-sectors for the new electoral system.

Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor thanked the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Candidate Qualification Review Committee, the Electoral Affairs Commission, the Electoral Affairs Office, and all staff in implementing and improving every aspect of the election system in strict accordance with the law, so that the elections are conducted in an open, fair and honest manner.

She also mentioned that this election has successfully implemented a number of optimization measures adopted for the first time, including the electronic voter register system and special queuing arrangements, to lay a solid foundation for future elections.

She also said that the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will summarize the practical experience of arrangements at polling stations on the 19th for future reference, and will continue to maintain close cooperation with relevant departments such as the Electoral Affairs Commission and the Registration and Electoral Office. The following general elections of the Legislative Council and the Chief Executive election have prepared comprehensive and detailed plans to ensure that the elections are held properly and smoothly.
