The line of prosperity and decline in the workplace: 35 years old has become a "hurdle" that cannot be crossed?

A friend was looking for a job, and he sighed. When he asked, he found out that he was stuck in his age.

Over 35 years old, she is almost restricted everywhere.

The cruelty in the workplace is particularly evident in terms of age.

Professor Zhou Wei from the Law School of Sichuan University used 300,000 job advertisements in Shanghai and Chengdu from 1995 to 2005 as a sample and found that employers generally mentioned ages under 35 in their job advertisements.

There have been reports that more than 80% of job seekers over the age of 35 feel that they have encountered age discrimination in the job search process.

The Internet joked, "Before 35 years old is human resources, after 35 years old is human cost." But what is the essential difference between 36 years old and 35 years old?

Why can't the work that can be done at the age of 35 be done at the age of 36?

Of course, in addition to the "35-year-old phenomenon," age discrimination has many manifestations.

Last year, a vegetable market in Wuhan issued a "Instructions for Entry", requiring that the female vendors in the vegetable market should not be over 45 years old and the male vendors should not be over 50 years old.

This makes many vendors in the vegetable market panic. They are too old to even sell vegetables?

What a job needs is capable people, not people of a certain age.

The reason is so simple, I am afraid that no one does not understand.

However, when it comes to setting the threshold for job hunting, why does age become a “hurdle” that cannot be crossed?

However, the other side of the coin is that the average age of our working population is increasing year by year.

According to the "China Human Capital Report 2020", from 1985 to 2018, the average age of the labor force (including students) in the country (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) has risen from 32.2 to 38.4 years.

The National Bureau of Statistics' migrant worker monitoring survey report also shows that the proportion of migrant workers over the age of 50 is increasing, while the proportion of migrant workers in other age groups has mostly declined to varying degrees.

In other words, the average age of the working population is gradually rising, but the age limit for workers in the workplace has not been loosened.

This makes middle-aged people become "people with difficulties in finding jobs."

In addition, the seventh national census showed that my country’s population of 60 years old and above has reached 264 million, accounting for 18.70% of the population. The average life expectancy has increased and the degree of aging has increased.

The "14th Five-Year Plan" and the 2035 long-term goal outline clearly stated that the statutory retirement age will be gradually delayed and the full use of human resources will be promoted.

This also shows that the average age of the social working population will continue to rise.

Those middle-aged "people with employment difficulties" are precisely the main force in the labor market.

In fact, with the level of health of modern people, even when people reach middle age, it is the time to get rich and powerful.

What's more, the increase in age will also bring about an increase in work experience.

The family status of "the old on the top and the younger on the bottom" will make them even more cherish the jobs they get.

However, these "extra points" do not seem to impress many employers.

In the long run, everyone will go from young to old.

No society can only rely on young people to create wealth and promote development.

It is obviously unreasonable to use age as a basis for judging whether a person is suitable for a certain position.

This is not only discrimination against individual workers, but also a great mismatch and waste of human resources in the entire society.

Some scholars have pointed out that age discrimination has become the most common form of discrimination in employment in our country.

Nevertheless, there are not many disputes and lawsuits filed because of age discrimination in the workplace.

This may be because the current society does not have a deep understanding of age discrimination. In many cases, people have not realized that it is a form of discrimination, and even feel that it is reasonable.

In addition, my country's "Labor Law" stipulates that workers enjoy equal employment and the right to choose occupations; it also points out that workers are not discriminated against because of their ethnicity, race, gender, and religious beliefs.

However, the concept of age discrimination is not clearly put forward.

This certainly does not mean that age discrimination is reasonable, but this concept is not directly reflected in the law.

However, this has also led to the relatively vague boundary in judicial practice, and the identification is relatively difficult.

Therefore, over the years, many representatives and committee members have proposed at the two sessions that the setting of unreasonable age limits for workers hinders social efficiency and employment fairness, and that age discrimination in employment should be actively reduced, and it is recommended that the prohibition of age discrimination be written into the law.

In the film "Intern", a 70-year-old grandfather applied to be an intern for a young female boss. With his own efforts, he won the trust and goodwill of colleagues. The story is warm and inspirational.

Age shouldn't be a fetter on the road to employment. Good talents should be used wisely, and those who have the ability should live in it. This is the reasonable direction of human resource flow.

Eliminate age discrimination in the workplace and protect everyone's equal employment rights. Don't let modern people become more and more healthy and live longer while trapped in the cage of age discrimination.
