The hit series is about the prodigy Beth Harmon, portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy.

In one of the matches she plays, Harmon's efforts are compared to the real chess professional Gaprindashvilis.

A commentator says: "The only unusual thing about her is really her gender, and not even that is unique in Russia", whereupon he continues: "We have Nona Gaprindashvili, but she is a female world champion and has never played against men".

According to Gaprindashvili, Netflix is lying about her career to amplify the drama.

Her lawyer points out that the statement is false, sexist and derogatory.

"In 1968, the year the scene takes place, she had competed against at least 59 male chess players (28 of them simultaneously in the same match), including at least ten grandmasters," it says in the 25-page lawsuit.

A Netflix spokesman said in a statement that they have great respect for Gaprindashvili's career, but that the lawsuit has low chances and that they will defend themselves forcefully.
