Nikon Corporation has revealed the winners of the 2021 Nikon Small World Microscopy Contest, an annual competition that presents the most beautiful images ever captured in science and research.

In its forty-seventh edition, the competition continues to celebrate the intricacies of nature and the ingenuity of microscopic investigation, with 103 images selected from the 1,900 submitted in the competition.

The first place award went to Jason Kirk of Baylor College of Medicine, who used a specially designed microscope system to capture 200 individual images of live Southern oak leaves, then combine them to create one stunning image.
