  • Live Coronavirus, Spain, today

More than 50% of Spanish adolescents between 12-19 years have received the

complete guideline

. And up. However, there are many doubts that arise about the vaccine in this age group. The news this week about the death of ex-motorcycling driver Jorge Lis shows that, in the face of hoaxes and misinformation, it is now more necessary than ever to spread the word about the importance of getting vaccinated.

To achieve this objective, the Ministry of Health and the Vaccine Advisory Committee of the Spanish Pediatric Association have joined forces by publishing a document that compiles the

most frequent doubts and questions

about vaccination against coronavirus in adolescents.

It is a document that is published from the most current scientific evidence, but also from kindness and sincerity, recognizing that it is normal for families and adolescents to have doubts.

Among other things, because the health workers themselves, researchers and even the health authorities also have them.

Here is a selection from the #TrendingTopic of the doubts about vaccination in adolescents:

WHAT VACCINES ARE USED IN SPAIN TO VACCINE ADOLESCENTS?

In the European Union we have two vaccines authorized for use from the age of 12:

Comirnaty

(Pfizer & BioNTech) and

Spikevax

(Moderna).

The two doses of the vaccine must be of the same brand, although in cases where due to lack of availability or by mistake a "mix" has been made between the two, the vaccination is considered valid.

CAN THE SECOND DOSE BE ADVANCED OR DELAYED?

Study trips abroad, vacations, and other special situations have led many families to consider juggling the second dose.

The reality is that it is not a good idea to overtake it.

The minimum interval between doses is 19 days for the Pfizer vaccine and 25 for the Moderna vaccine.

If the second dose is advanced further, it will be invalidated and it would have to be repeated 21 or 28 days (depending on the vaccine) after the invalidated dose.

On the other hand, delaying the administration of the second dose for a few days (even weeks or months) does not affect its effectiveness and is considered valid.

However, you have to try to avoid this situation because while you have a single dose the chances of becoming infected are greater.

CAN ADOLESCENTS GO TO VACCINATE ONESELF?

It depends on the age.

While adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15 must always be accompanied by at least one of their parents or legal guardians, those over 16 can go alone (although it is recommended that they always be accompanied by a trusted family member or friend).

In vaccination centers consent is given verbally and a written form is not necessary.

IF THE ADOLESCENT IS NOT FEELING WELL ON THE DAY OF THE VACCINATION ... CAN THE ADOLESCENT GET VACCINATED?

Any mild acute illness, without fever, not related to COVID-19 does not justify delaying vaccination.

The problem is that there are many symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, headache, tiredness ...) that can be caused by COVID-19.

In case of presenting these symptoms, it is recommended to postpone the vaccination and consult the health center to assess whether a diagnostic test for acute infection (antigen test or PCR) is necessary.

IF THE DAY OF THE VACCINATION THE ADOLESCENT DISCOVERES THAT THEY HAVE HAD CLOSE CONTACT WITH A CONFIRMED CASE ... CAN THEY GO FOR A VACCINATION?

No, in this case you

have to wait to complete the 10-day quarantine.

Remember that a narrow case is considered to be any person who has been for 15 or more minutes in 24 hours in the same space as a person with a confirmed infection.

SHOULD I BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE RISK OF MYOCARDITIS AND PERICARDITIS?

Fears have been sparked by the reporting of some very rare cases of inflammation of parts of the heart (myocarditis and pericarditis) after COVID-19 vaccination.

This has occurred mainly in male adolescents and within a few days after the second dose.

We must know that

the vast majority of these cases have recovered in a few days, with little treatment

.

In fact, myocarditis and pericarditis occur more frequently if the natural infection is suffered, so the risk-benefit of vaccination is favorable to vaccination.

WHAT SYMPTOMS SHOULD I WATCH FOR THE RISK OF MYOCARDITIS AND PERICARDITIS?

In the event of pain in the thorax (chest), difficulty in breathing or a sensation of a very fast or strong heartbeat, you should urgently consult your health center or the emergency department of the referring hospital.

ON THE DAY OF THE VACCINATION, CAN A NORMAL LIFE BE MADE?

Yes, it is not necessary to interrupt normal activities (going to the institute, physical activity, etc.).

However, it

may be reasonable to avoid strenuous physical exercise

and prolonged exposure to the sun if ambient temperatures are high.

WHAT TO DO IF THE COVID VACCINATION COINCIDES WITH OTHER VACCINES OVER TIME?

It is possible that it could coincide with the vaccination, for example, of HPV or tetanus-diphtheria.

Although there are no studies available on the co-administration of vaccines with those of COVID-19, no interference is expected.

In any case, the current official recommendation is to

separate them for a week.

IF THE ADOLESCENT HAS ALREADY PASSED COVID-19 ... HOW SHOULD THE VACCINATION BE?

They should be administered a single dose 4-8 weeks after diagnosis.

Although it was previously recommended to wait six months, since August 30 for people 65 and younger who have passed COVID-19, including adolescents, this period has been shortened.

This is due, on the one hand, to the greater availability of vaccines, and on the other, to the need to protect ourselves as soon as possible against the delta variant.

AND THE MILLION QUESTION ... CHILDREN UNDER 12 YEARS OLD FOR WHEN?

For now, there are no licensed vaccines for children under twelve years of age.

When there is a vaccine suitable for this age, the health authorities will establish if it must be administered, to whom, how and when.
