"The summer woman", roughly "the summer woman", was found in the archives of Yale University.

The story is about an American academic who visits Rome every summer because of the relationship with a woman he meets when she walks the streets.

But in the years after World War II, the man experienced a growing hostility towards Americans.

The story testifies to Tennessee Williams' versatility, says Andrew Gulli, editor of The Strand magazine.

- With a few broad strokes, William draws the beauty of the country and the genuine kindness of the people there, while he masterfully draws parallels between the American protagonist's temporary relationship with a prostitute and US interference abroad, both relationships full of conflict, resentment and disillusionment.

Williams is one of the more significant American playwrights of the 20th century, with works such as "Linje lusta" and "Katt på hett tintak".

He has also previously written about Italy and its people in "The rose tattoo".
