On the French Mediterranean coast, nine people drowned while swimming in high waves on Wednesday - in different places.

The French television broadcaster BFMTV reported on Thursday.

Previously it was reported that seven people died and one more was missing and two were seriously injured, according to the newspaper La Dêpeche du Midi.

The helpers moved out to fourteen drowning people in stormy seas with several helicopters.

The victims are between 64 and 73 years old.

The swimming accidents occurred on the coast between Montpellier and Béziers in various places, such as La Grande-Motte, Agde and Cassis near Montpellier.

After the end of the summer season, the beaches are no longer constantly monitored by lifeguards.

The Mediterranean attracts people due to the warm temperatures of more than 20 degrees Celsius.

Some places had banned swimming in the afternoon due to the weather.

Before that, there were severe storms and floods in the south of France.

At times, an average rainfall of two months fell within three hours.

Damage was reported in many places.

Especially the Gard department with the cities of Avignon and Nîmes were hit by floods.

Farmers and winegrowers complain about losses.
