In the fifth wave of infection with the new coronavirus, it was found that the percentage of people who died in the active generation under the age of 50 was about 17%, which was higher than when the infection spread before that.

Experts say that the effects of vaccination have reduced the deaths of the elderly, leading to an increase in the proportion of people in their 50s or younger who have not been vaccinated.

Based on the data released by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the number of people who died during the fifth wave of infection, from June 30 to September 8, was 194 by age group. There were 964 people in their 60s and above, and 16.8% of those in their 50s and under were of known age.

Looking at each wave of spread of infection, 648 people in their 60s or older and 57 people in their 50s or younger died by the end of May last year during the first wave, 8.1%, the second wave, last year. The number of people who died from July to September was 536 in their 60s and over, and 24 in their 50s and under, 4.3%. During the third wave, those who died from October last year to the beginning of March 5619 people in their 60s and over, 175 people in their 50s and under, 3.0%, 4538 people in their 60s and over, and 178 people in their 50s and under, who died during the 4th wave, from the beginning of March to the end of June. It was 3.8% for people.

The proportion of people in their 50s or younger among those who died is about twice as high as that of the first wave and more than four times as much as that of the third and fourth waves in the fifth wave. Although there are still many people, the proportion of the total is decreasing due to the effect of the vaccine.

Professor Kazuhiro Tateda of Toho University, a member of the government's subcommittee on measures against the new coronavirus, said, "In the generation under 50, who have not been vaccinated, the actual number of people dying does not change significantly, but the proportion is increasing. In the future, the number of people who will die due to inoculation may decrease, but there is a risk that they will be infected again and spread, so it is important to continue measures for a while.
