Researchers from the Grenoble University Hospital have launched a call for volunteers in order to be able to continue their studies on the use of hydrogen against the coronavirus.
As soon as the Covid-19 appeared, they had indeed started clinical trials with subjects over the age of 60.
The minimum age was raised to 40 years in May, tells France 3 Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.
Doctors are now looking for individuals over the age of 18.
To participate in the study, they must have "symptoms of acute Covid, for at least 5 days," said Jean-Luc Bosson, the professor of public health at Grenoble Alpes University.
The progress of the work is threatened by the lack of participants.
200 new subjects have recently registered but "we would need at least 500 people", estimated the doctor.
Stop inflammatory mechanisms
The researchers are nevertheless confident and assure that the hydrogen could reduce the inflammatory symptoms of the coronavirus by 30%.
“There is no risk, the molecule is small,” explained Jean-Luc Bosson.
[…] It is capable of capturing reactive oxygen species, species that trigger inflammatory mechanisms ”.
The volunteers, some of whom are in Tunisia or Serbia, must drink 250 ml of hydrogen-enriched water twice a day for 21 days.
Half of them consume a placebo without knowing it.
They are all monitored by teleconsultation and reviews will be carried out after three, six and twelve months.
