At Lake Akan in Kushiro City, Hokkaido, the specialty smelt fishing began on the 14th.

At Lake Akan in Kushiro City, the ban on smelt fishing, a specialty of Kushiro City, was lifted on the 14th, and a small boat went out to the lake after 7:00 am and sank a net of about 180 meters.

Then, after slowly pulling the net for about 30 minutes, lively smelts were landed one after another.

The size is about 5 to 7 cm, and most of them are fat.

According to the fishery cooperative, smelt is shipped to hotels and inns for tempura, and about 80% is sold in Hokkaido for processing such as tsukudani.

Smelt fishing in Lake Akan will be carried out three times a week until the end of next month, and it is planned to land about 20 tons.

Mr. Hitoshi Esaki of the Lake Akan Fisheries Cooperative said, "The water is clean, so there is no odor, and the bones are soft. It's delicious, so I definitely want you to eat it."
