The Met Gala, usually called "fashion's biggest night out" (roughly the fashion world's big party night), is held every year at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to raise money for the museum's costume and fashion department.

Last year, the event was forced to be canceled due to the pandemic, but this year a smaller group of vaccinated celebrities had to show up on the red carpet again.

About 300 guests were present, about a third as many as in a normal year.

This year's theme - "In America: A lexicon of fashion" - embedded for widely differing interpretations.

Gold in abundance

Lil Nas X, who was praised at the MTV gala last night, was dressed in three layers of gold.

First a royal foot embroidered mantle.

Under it he wore a gold armor à la C-3PO from "Star Wars" and when he had peeled it off, a body-like glittery gold overall remained.

And there were more who had invested in equipment in more warehouses.

Among others, the tennis player Serena Williams, who came in an oversized, fluffy feather coat in white, black and pink over a glittery body sock.

Olympic gymnast hits big

Another recurring detail was, as is often the case at the gala, the long sweeping trailers.

Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, also dressed in several layers, carried a trailer that was said to weigh about 40 kilos.

The event is usually held on the first Monday in May, but this year the gala serves as a spectacular end to New York Fashion Week.

Here are a few more world stars from tonight's gala.
